amanda says... I live in Geraldton and have rabbits by the hundreds (outside the rabb-proof fence - they even eat the Oleanders!!? - and chew thru the retic hose) I built a fence that didn't require trenching - but with the cost of fencing - it's not cheap - i did the labour myself which was hard work but not rocket science. It's worked 100% - all other methods involve killing them. The not trenching method is easy - you just get 90cm high rabbit netting and lay 30cm flat on the ground and go up 60cm against a ringlock fence or such (i only went up 30cm origially and they jumped over) they don't dig underneath. I use sand-tent pegs every 8m or so to keep it firm to the ground. | About the Author amanda19 geraldton WA 12th May 2009 8:53pm #UserID: 2309 Posts: 4607 View All amanda19's Edible Fruit Trees |

amanda says... Hey sue-down-the-road... I did a rectangle: 100m (east n west side) and 150m north south. I'm a maths-moron - but it's roughly 4 acres. As we are coastal, like u, we chose good quality galvanised ringlock and rabbit netting (eg: waratah) but u can use cheaper gal - just don't expect it to last anywhere near as long. Good luck!! they are buggars aren't they?? I saved heaps on labour (the major cost) by building it myself. Let me know if u want more info at any stage. It's not hard to do. The rabbit netting is the most expensive part. The no-trenching saves lots of time and money and extends the life of the netting. I did mine b4 cost of steel went up - suggest u contact rural suppliers for quotes. I have been battling these guys for years now and there is no other way I have found (yet) apart from gassing the warrens and deep ripping them (cheapest options) Laying bait is like throwing money on the ground and although you can buy the viruses from the Ag dept they are $100 a vial (i need 3 for my property) and it's not permanent. | About the Author amanda19 geraldton WA 16th May 2009 11:30pm #UserID: 2309 Posts: 4607 View All amanda19's Edible Fruit Trees |

Speedy says... They've started to eat my caper plants and the saffron plants...bloody rotters! Hey I think can feel another 'revenge recipe' comming on.. 'Tajine of Rabbit with capers and preserved lemons' blend the following ingredients in food processor:- 2 cloves garlic, 2 med onions, 1/2 cup parsley and 1/2 cup coriander Marinate Rabbit pieces in this for 3hrs (or overnight)in fridge. In a pan (or Tajine) fry rabbit pieces in 1/3 cup of ghee or olive oil until browned. Add the rest of the marinade, along with 1/2 tspn turmeric powder, 1/4 tspn saffron pre-soaked in water, juice of 1/2 lemon cover and cook over low heat until tender(1 1/2 - 1 3/4hrs). Check after 45min add water if needed. Dice 2-3 preserved lemons and add these along with salted capers 1-2 tblspoons should do it. Season with salt and pepper. Cook for 10 min more serve with cous cous or French bread. That'll teach em! Fencing is the the only sure way to really solve the problem.... but I think I'll give this one a go anyway ;) | About the Author Speedy Swan Hill, Vic 22nd May 2009 12:14am #UserID: 2305 Posts: 250 View All Speedy's Edible Fruit Trees |

amanda says... Hi Sue - don't if you r still out there - but for what it's worth - I did try a few other tricks with the rabbits b4 I built my fence. An old-timer told me they don't like being around the smell of dynamic lifter - I tried this but it it didn't work long term - maybe another smell like that stuff to keep dogs from peeing on the lawn? (citronella?) I also made these little windmills out of soft drink containers - you put stones in them and they are quite noisy when they rotate - these worked quite well (only when windy) but maybe there are other noise ideas that might work too..like those awful plastic frog things that croak when u walk past them!? I also use solar lights. The only trouble with these things is that the rabbits get used to them - so u would need to move them around now and then. | About the Author amanda19 geraldton.WA 30th May 2009 11:37am #UserID: 2309 Posts: 4607 View All amanda19's Edible Fruit Trees |
sue says... hi amanda hows it goin neighbour? haha and speedy, thanks for the info and {ugh} recipe , i couldnt eat em im an animal lover haha, your fence is fabulous amanda!!!!!!!!!! your very clever.. what do you mean by "no trenching"? fraid im not a farmer, are you? you sound very young to do all that work by yourself,im 63 and full of arthritis so i dont think i could do it by myself. ive got two dogs one is part staffy whose too fat to chase rabbits and the other is part husky who just sits on the verandah and looks at em. ive tried differant things like someone told me fish sauce, and the yard just smelt like chinese takeaway and the rabbits took no notice, solar lights just show em where the lawn is, so ill try the noise bit thanks heaps for all your help!! | About the Author sue11 lancelin 31st May 2009 3:13pm #UserID: 1581 Posts: 17 View All sue11's Edible Fruit Trees |
Speedy says... Sue, No worries, That recipe works well for fish too. Just dont marinate it too long, and line the bottom of the dish with some thin slices of potato cook for 5 min or til potato half cooked. Place the fish on top of potato Then some tomato slices on top of fish.(not essential- maybe not good for you?) only cook for 1/2 -3/4 hr. enjoy | About the Author Speedy Swan Hill, Vic 31st May 2009 11:17pm #UserID: 2305 Posts: 250 View All Speedy's Edible Fruit Trees |
