shade house

    4 responses

torrential rain and plenty of slugs and snails. I lost plenty of herb seedlings.
I think a shade house would be the solution. Something like 4 m2.
Can someone recommend a brand which lasts long?

Do you grow in a raised bed (i.e sleepers all round) this stops the slugs and snails as they don't like climbing on the rough timber. I use a movable shade hutch. just a frame with shadeclothe on top. Bout 1 mtr high easy to move in and out

I can't see how a shade house would help with slugs and snails.

By far the best solution I ever found was going out in the dark with a torch and stamping on them. I used to have thousands of them in the UK, tried nematodes and everything, but stamping was the only thing that made any difference.

Those snails and slugs certainly had no problem with timber. I had a whole rough timber covered fence and it would be one of my best place for picking them off.

I put this on another thread a while ago. Sensitive stomachs be warned!

I collected snails most nights over a couple of winters, and had few snails around this year. I put them in a four litre ice cream container, covered them with water and put the lid on. A couple of months later - fertiliser! Smelly, but this soon goes away.

I figure they can put back what they have taken! And I agree with Pauline.

OH this reminds me of a recipe of my mother which might work! But its far worse than yours: Put snails in container. Pour boiling water over them and use this water to water your plants.
(I recall that she said it worked, but I don't know if this was fiction)
