I think it all depends what state you're in. (not sober or otherwise).

The names are mixed but it seems that the most common convention is to call the above types used for greens mostly,that are big and usually white spring onions.The ones with clumping corms,multple cloves usually brown or purple eaten mostly for their nutty bulbs are shallots and these are more esteemed.The big single bulbed ones that look like immature onions I would stuill call spring onions.

They are both "spring onions" - or should be? Shallot has always been the domain of what we now have to call the "french shallot"..?

Green onion/spring onion - if we all stick to the same names then it will happen...just like "custard apple" mix ups - and all the "cherry" mix ups too..? ;-)

Amanda it would be impossible to expect everyone to call anything by the same name unless we all use the botanical names; I can't see that happening. Australians in particular love giving nicknames to everything.

Was it the Americans that started calling spring onions shallots? (or did they use 'scallion'..?)
I think it's slowly changing MaryT...french shallots are becoming more widely used here - especially when our Vietnamese immigrants came? And now u see them used more on cooking shows too.
I love french shallots...so mild and tasty hey? Lovely roasted whole...
