Fork out a few hundred bucks on a really, really slick Vbulletin website dedicated to international tropical fruit discussion and trade?

I think we need an alternative to TFF given that so many have had bad experiences with it and that it is an incredibly nepotistic and americentrist. Daleys is good but no PM system etc make it difficult, and its mostly an Aussie based type deal.

What do you guys think? BK I'd give you mod status if you wanted it.

I totally agree Sternus. The tff is just a saleschannel for a few small vendors who think they are something in the tropical fruitworld.

We need a good forum for Asians, Afrikans, South Americans and Aussies of course.

I'm tired of questions of people who grow a mangopit in an empty milkcarton in London for example.

But when i started posting on Gardenweb i got a scout redirecting me to TFF so i went there.

I'm still waiting for the tff to apologise to asian vendors who sell durianseeds out of season. It sure is possible to keep them alive for 3 months, people have proven it.

I grow fruit for hobby only and if it gives me stress i'll find me another hobby or stop posting. I'm willing to help anybody, even Americans as long as they aren't from Florida.

But a forum doesn't have to cost money at all i think, you can just open one at the big forumhostswebsites.

Startpagina.nl is one like that, i think it's just free and public and anybody can start a forum there.

But this forum is also great, it only has to be updated or moved to another server, the name could stay the same.

Also a temperate fruitforum would be great. You aussies need better cherry variety's by the way.

Well, I can build the site easily enough, and well enough. And can do the legals/indemnity. The real challenge will be getting the buy, sell and trade section active and thriving--and just plain getting people posting. I'm pretty sure I could a whole bunch of people interested get,but I'd need everyone's help to get it the attention is requires, that would happen by people contacting their friends everywhere overseas.

I'll have to go with Vbulletin just because of the admin features and OS compatibility. It's pricey but that money does buy you a lot, and it's very easy for people to use, which is the main thing.

Forums are only ever as good as the people who join and contribute to them. You need a lot of both those things to make it good.

There is nothing worse than a dead forum with only a handfull of contributors.

Maybe you can find a sponsor Sternus? ARS is a great brand for gardenequipment from Japan,or any other company in this business might be interested? Bayer or Yara or you name it, but it has to be a worldwide brand.

I have nothing against people who sell seeds/scions plants because i know how hard it is to grow/find/sell/send them. But many sellers are too pushy or even lie about how great their fruit is.

I don't know Vbulletin but as long as they supply a fast connection and easy to use website it sounds good to me.

There is a huge world waiting for a good fruitforum and maybe it can even be in several languages.

I know where you're coming from waterfall, but with all due respect, you're not far into the game. As you spend more time on TFF, you'll come to realize just how deep the few people who run that site have their hands in each others pockets, and what that means for most traders and sellers--indeed most members outside the US. It is really, really ugly. I could tell you many stories.

We need something else--something non partisan. Something where the site admin isn't someone who won't ban a repellant member simply because he sees him at the fruit and spice park every weekend, so instead bans the victim to solve the problem. Something with an OT baord that isn't run by a guy who believes lizard men run the government and are conspiring to have orphans put fluoride into hot dog wieners or whatever other insane bullshit it is this week. A site which doesn't support other sites that pretend that maha chanook is a mango variety invented in Florida.

It's a circus. It is the Ricky Lake of forums. The only reason its popular is because there isn't anything else. I'd like to change that. Build it and they will come.

Solly Sternus but this time i don't agree. I never saw people fighting in the Ricky Lake show if i remember well, it's more a Jerry Springer show there with Steve the bouncer up in the a.. of mr. Mangocourse because he has a parttime job there.

Also they have never ever posted any pics of a tree they grew themselves.

Most laughable is that selfcalled expert from Hawaii though. He is smarter then all asians together:
- durians don't make you feel warm
- you can drink alcohol and eat durian at the same time without problems
- you can't eat pulasan seeds
- there is no cream of coconutmilk
- eating many longans don't make you feel warm or having blisters in your mouth
- it is impossible to store durian (or other) seeds for a long period.
- it is impossible to make a precocious mangosteen, even not with a university degree from a Thai agriculture university
- It is impossible to have a grafted mangosteen fruit after 18 months.
-Toddy palms only grow in very arid climates

If i start thinking i can easy find more examples but this is enough i would say.
I also have seen him fighting and namecalling on the tff about the price of durians on hawaiian markets....i mean who cares about that?

Sure he will reply here soon with his black ninja pyama's. It doesn't surprise me that he couldn't find much here in TH haha. If you look like a bum you will get treated so here in Asia.

sternus 1 Does this help you? I found a site for Forum Hosting:
https://www.siteground.com/forum-hosting.htm
https://www.siteground.com/web-hosting.htm
You can get a com.au with them.
They cover Asia and the Pacific etc
Their rates are very good.
Best of all, it looks like they give good support: chat, tickets AND phone

sternus1 Was trying to be helpful but I don't think I read this post closely. If anyone could handle something sophisticated like that, you probably could.
I run 6 websites - some hosted and some server. One is a special WebCards website I have customized......what you're after looked totally foreign to me. You must be pretty good. Your advice was good in one of my posts. Thanks again.

BK You two get along very well. Would be really good if you can strike up something together. You enjoy this forum and I do too. Previously, I have not signed up on any forum because much of the content on forum sites is so negative and unhealthy reading. There is a lot of good input on the Daleys Forum that attracted me for some time.

Hey Guys, I know from someone's caution over YouTube and Natural Health Research that Bayer is Bad News (behind the scene) like Monsanto. Please do not trust them with any of your ventures ever - they're not nice to know. I do not know the other crowd.

For me, I choose to go independent with all my ventures so I can stay independent....no impositions with ads....and no corruption. It's up to you what you do of-course.

www.health-alerts.info
www.janetswebcards.com

"no pesky ads"

www.janetsgardentips.com

is a less professional "hobby-site"

Allright, so I bought vbulletin. Will be working on the site for a month or so before it goes live. It will be faster, have better OS/device support than TFF and will also, hopefully, have translation software.

Sounds great.....I wish you well. Would take a few weeks to make all that operative I reckon. Do let us know when it goes live. I gave the Web Cards about the same time - to have reasonable content, with the different features. I'd like to see how it works out. Hopefully BB does team up with you.

Sounds good Sternus, many times a day i can't go to the Daleys website because there is no connection.

I just have a new provider so maybe the problem is on my side, that's possible but my connection is very fast (fibre).

It would be great if you can give a free offer to all new members of your site, something like free papaya-seeds or so after the first 10 posts or so.

Also it would be great if those indo/malay sellers come to your site.

I saw kepel seedlings for sale today, 3000 baht (100 au$) for a seedling from 60 cm....Oh and i found a thai propagator who wants to buy all my dragonfruits but i won't sell them.
I got them for free and only give them to hobby growers like myself.

Oh i just read about the mod status for me, well i will help you if i can but being a mod is not easy. Almost every site that contribute to has a mod (or many) and some people attack them very personal which isn't worth it.

You can expect them as well on your site.

Sternus can you receive fruittree's from Thailand with phytopapers?

If so then tell me what you want to have, i know a guy who's willing to get papers on any tree. Official phytoreports.

I will show him your new website as soon as it's in the air.

Oh and you can pay him in seeds.....if you like of course.

Nah not without Phyto BK, even then it's about 2k plus just to get the plant to your door, and it might not ever get that far. It's an area of Australian policy that really, really needs reform.

yep, those too. A phyto is just one part of the process, that's the easy part. The tree then has to be put through all the hoops in Australia, which costs thousands.

Tasmania has the strictest quarantine protocols in Australia, hands down. Almost impossible to import anything into tazzie.

And what about Tasmania? Do they have the same strict rules as Oz?
