Surinam cherry

    10 responses

Phil starts with ...
Does anyone grow the sweeter, black and less resinous form of Eugenia uniflora? Most selections are the lighter red form which isn't as palatable, but have heard that the sweet form is present in Australia. Would be happy to buy seeds if anyone knows of it.

Yes there seems to be a demand for better varieties if anyone knows of a grower.

Steve says...
"Eugenia uniflora" is the red Brazilian Cherry.
The black cherry in the photo looks like the black Grumichama "Eugina dombeyi".
I've found the Brazilian cherry can be tart if unripe, but if left to ripen on the tree, are much sweeter.
The native Cedar Bay Cherry "Eugenia moluccana" is very nice, I prefer this to the Brazilian & the black Grumichama is maybe even better.

PHIL : Have you contacted this website (U.S.A?), below, for any seeds of the black variety of Eugenia uniflora?
www.tradewindsfruit.com/surinam_cherry.htm
Their website says 'Seeds Available!',but does not say if they sell the black variety.
And/or grow and eat the sweet but slow growing Australian native Eugenia reinwardtiana (E.moluccana?)?

I have got some seeds from Tradewinds just before xmas... most of them got through, however some were confiscated by Quarrantine, so it is definetly worthwhile checking it out first.

Yes, it's always wise to check the AQIS website so that you don't waste money bringing in precious seeds only to have them incinerated.
