Hi Anonymous, I understand that there is a tropical taro and a more temperate one, is that right? If so which one have you tried to grow? In Okayama Japan they grow a lot of taro and it gets very cold here in the winter, sometimes even snows. Did you give your taro lots of water? I notice they grow them here where its mostly very damp sometimes even in standing water with the rice.Jantina

Mine was a tropical one from far north QLD so obviously it was a tropical variety. I grew them in pot. I did give it some water but not a lot. May be that why the rhizomes were very small. I will give it another try.

Hello MH,the lady who grew them has moved away now but my memory is that she simply put sprouted tubers in the soil in spring and off they went. I do not know whether she got a big harvest or not.I do know she had horses and used to put lots of manure on her pumpkins but would think that on sweet potatoes that would result in lots of top growth instead of tubers because of the nitrogen. When we get back to Australia in a week or so I will chase it up and post the info.I have been meaning to have a go myself. Jantina

Hi Jantina
Hope to hear of your success. The leaves are edible and rather tasty when stir-fried.I'm not sure about producing tubers as I think you need a long summer for the tubers to grow.

Can Cassava be used simply for screening without ever harvesting? Looking for something easy to propagate and grow on the Limestone Coast (Southeast coast) of South Australia

Great that it is frozen , imports of live plants should not be allowed . There is an Australian taro industry and it could be destroyed by diseased imports. Years ago there was a big drama with live chinese imports .
