Hi Everyone.
I just wanted to ask what people's opinion on the health risks of using tyres as vegetable planters or composting was?
Does anyone have any information on whether or not they will leach toxic chemicals into the soil. Im thinking that you could probably coat them in a non toxic paint but....

I would never use tyres in the garden. There are health risks and they look stunningly ugly. The previous house owner put old tyres around trees, which is the most stupid idea ever. My husband had to take a hacksaw to get rid of them, if you take an angle grinder it stinks to hell. And if someone wants to give you tyres, you must know that you pay when you want to get rid of them. If you want to make something out of old tyres try shoe soles, this is done in some countries.

I visited an organic herb nursery here in sa a couple of years ago. On top of their dam they had somehow managed to float loads of old tyres to stop evaporation.
I did ask how on earth they had got organic certification using old tyres in the water they use to water their edable plants. According to them it was all oked with them.
I have had no faith in anything in sa sold as organic ever since.
Personally I would take the risk for things like potatoes, if they didnt look so bad lol. But then I have no problem with treated pine either...
