Underplanting citrus (forum)

I have heard that citrus trees don't like competition to their root system and that there are few plants which should be planted under them.
I was wondering if planting pinapples would work due to their shallow root systems?(I live in the tropics)
If not does anyone have any other suggestions for things that could be planted under my citrus?
Many thanks

I would only ask what about competition for water and nutrients?
I have seen chives growing under mature citrus but I have nothing under mine because I mulch.

I have a number of citrus trees in large pots and I always have something growing at their feet as I must maximise the use of space. In different pots I have garlic chives, spring onions, wild rockets, parsley, basil, mint
