Wanted Cuttings: Mexican Sunflower

    14 responses

Hi All,

I am looking to purchase Mexican Sunflower cuttings or full plants, I found seeds for sale (in aus) but the variety I am after Tithonia diversifolia does not have viable seed & can only be grown by cuttings, Daleys doesn't sell it yet.

Do you have a cutting you could sell or trade with me?
-Tithonia diversifolia

I'm also looking for an infertile cutting of Tithonia diversifolia. Did you manage to find any in Australia yet?

Hi Luke, maybe you can join me in the hunt? As I have been unsuccessful in locating a Tithonia diversifolia.

Wow I see your way up northern NSW, nice.

What rare fruits do you grow?
What are your plans for the Mexican Sunflower?

I am shocked to find there are some studies done which show it does have viable seed, I was under the impression it can only be grown from seed?

Hi Farouk, I recently bought 100 frost-free acres of red volcanic soil 35km west of Byron Bay. I'm starting to collect lots of different fruit and nut trees but mainly macadamias, avocados, jaboticabas, citrus and custard apples. I also propagate a lot of local rainforest trees. I want to plant mexican sunflower along my rows of fruit trees as a chop and drop mulch.

Tithonia grows wild along the roadsides here, I could maybe get some offsets if you're still interested

Hi TyalgumPhil, I recently purchased seeds but now I am worried that I will contribute to environmental issues. Is there any way that I could get some cuttings? Thanks

I am happy to follow this thread. I ended up buying pigeon pea seeds for chop and drop because I couldn't find Mexican sunflower cuttings.

Mexican Sunflower is actually Safflower where they obtain Safflower oil from processing seeds - easy to grow from seed and makes a poor mans saffron - barely get much colour but was fun to grow once.

I have potted up some cuttings I took yesterday, happy to share if anyone still wants them. They cover entire roadside embankments up here in the subtropics, need to be kept under control in the home/permaculture setting

Hi. Just signed up here and I'm also looking for cuttings of this plant. Bought some overseas from eBay but our customs destroyed them. :(

I hope someone could send some for me. Thanks.

I found about that eBay store. The seller is so nice. Already bought a few cuttings two months ago. And they're exploding. :)
