Whats that bug?

    6 responses

I was away overseas for 3 weeks and could not tend to my plants. 3 out of 4 of my citrus plants' leaves and fruits have been eaten by some bugs. I found this one on the Blood Orange. What bug is it? Not sure if this is the same bug that has attacked the other plants. What do i do to protect my citrus plants from these?

Don't worry about them ManishU, they don't do much damage and turn into a beautiful butterfly later.
If you must get rid of them, try Success or Pyrethrum, don't forget to add a wetting agent.

They will get pretty big and munch a few leaves. The younger stages are an ugly black and white catterpillar that you'd be even more tempted to squash. They seem to favour the lotsa-lemons, but any cirtus is usually on the menu. The plants always recover well from this short season of natural pruning. Here is a bit more info:

If you do want to keep them off your plants, just pick them off and give them to someone else who might want them or who has chooks (chooks love them!). They are slow moving and pretty obvious to human eyes and never really occur in huge numbers so hand removal is easy.

And then i found this caterpillar on my guava tree (ignore the spider). It has eaten all the new foliage. What is this one? i have already removed it though.
Its fun to find all these varied insects in my garden; but its sad that they damage the plant and have to be gotten rid of :(

Sounds like Guava Moth Caterpillar, but it doesn't really look like it in the picture. It's hard to tell by the photo, but it looks to be a pretty well armoured thing, yes?

Yes, it was well armoured. And i guess it was entering the pupal stage as one of its ends was attached to the stem when i removed it.
