fig 8/10BJ's Edible FruitsUpdate: 17 days 16hrs Comments: - Rescued (a friend didn't want the plant anymore) as a dormant pot-bound plant that had never fruited. I pruned it within an inch of its life and it seems much happier now. I'm hoping I'll get fruit next year. leaves emerge in August / September. There only appears to be a single fruit. But oh, the taste of that little fruit ... divine! As a kid I used to eat wild figs by the river, and I've eaten shop figs, but this is so much yummier. Unfortunately I often forget to water the pot in the summer ... so perhaps that is a factor. I really need to figure a better location for this plant. The fig only gets washing machine run off, but it still really needs to be planted rather than in a pot - I'm hoping to plant it in a soak-well when I build a vegetable patch (so worms can move in and out but roots are trapped). It will be used to shade summer sun near the laundry door. I am yet to figure the ideal spot - additional water has resulted in a few more fruit but it doesn't seem to be doing much. I have added worms from the worm farm. I'm going to release this guy onto the farm (a friend wants a small fig on their rural property). I cannot put him in the ground and he's not a "pretty" feature in the pot so I'd rather he had a bit more attention and I could plant somethign I use more. Very tasty, but hidden out the back so I'd rather see it go somewhere appreciated. Planted: 2009 Height 2 metres Growing: In a Pot Qty: 1 Sun/Shade: Full Sun Water Given in: Winter Pollination: Self Pollination Pest Control: None Question: How can I find out what type of fig this is? Was this review helpful? Yes | No | Report CommentsBrad says... [650 days 21hrs ago]the fruit will most likely identify it. Most likely it was a cutting, rather than seed growing, so it should be good. If not, you can graft figs or start new from cuttings. I'm growing on a couple varieties, but they're still tiny* You need your own My Edibles Page to contribute Quick & Easy |

Olive - old, existing Nathan's Edible FruitsUpdate: 41 days 4hrs Comments: - This poor old thing had obviously been cut down by the previous owner(s), and is now just suckers. Many of the olive trees in this area aparently bear quite well Planted: 1900 Height 3 metres Growing: In the Ground Sun/Shade: Full Sun Water Given in: Summer Organic Status:Organic Question: Is it going to be viable to keep this tree? Will the suckers be worth pruning back to just 1 or 2, or will it be worth trying to graft onto the old manky trunk somewhere down low? Was this review helpful? Pomegranate - Rosavaya (Cutting) Kath's Edible FruitsUpdate: 91 days 6hrs Comments: - A lovely plant that is growing really well with little -or rather no attention. Beautiful red leaf flush of new growth in the spring, lights up the bottom of the orchard. On fire in the afternoon sunset as the glowing tail end of the day lights up the new growth. Gorgeous. Tough spot in the orchard - lives in the shaddow of the weed wall! - But on the bright side at least the wattle shading it has gone. Weeping foliage & gorgeous flowers make this a lovely plant to have in the orchard. All flower dropped 2010, 2011, tried hand pollinating - crossing with a Wonderful. Picked my first fruit February 2012 & made some delicious and beautifully colourde pomegranate dressing. Fig White Adriatic (Cutting) 10/10 Kathy's Edible FruitsUpdate: 109 days 19hrs Comments: - My white fig was a gift from a gorgeous little old man who brought it with him from Greece a LONG time ago when it was OK to do so. I can't be sure that it is an Adriatic fig but I can guess. Spring 2010: I decided to try deep-rooting it when I repotted it. Seems to have worked really well. It has been slow to get re-growing but seems really happy once it settled down. Autumn 2011: I let it fruit this season which admittedly restricted its growth but now with the colder weather it has lost all of its leaves but the fruit have not ripened. Looks like an alien tree! Spring 2011: It seems to have rotted overwinter. No indication as to why. Prolly shouldn't have let it fruit theyear. Chris has promised me a new cutting - but have to wait til winter next year! :O( Fruiting Months January, February, March Planted: 2009 Height 0.5 metres Growing: In a Pot Qty: 1 First Fruited: 1 Years after I planted Cutting Sun/Shade: Full Sun Pollination: No Was this review helpful? Olive - Manzanillo Kathy's Edible FruitsUpdate: 109 days 19hrs Comments: - Summer 2010:I bought him at a closing down sale. He wasn't a happy chappy but I could see his potential. He came very wonky but with staking/training and careful pruning he should be strong enough to stand up on his own in about 6 months. Spring 2011:he is strong enough to stand on his own now so I am using the stakes and a good pruning to train him into the shape I want. Flowers everywhere this yearbut I don't think that I will let him fruit. Planted: 2010 Height 1.5 metres Growing: In a Pot Qty: 1 Sun/Shade: Full Sun Pollination: No Fertiliser or Organics Used: Charlie Carp, Seasol, worm juice, Blood and Bone, Dynamic Lifter (in rotation) Pest Control: He got some sort of sap-sucking gross black thing on his leaves but I just sprayed with Dragon's Blood (habanero chilli, garlic and detergent concoction) and he is right as rain.
