Persimmon - Rojo (A)

Large, sweet, jelly like fruit when fully ripe. Fruit is deep red coloured, seedless and size is large and elongated with blunt ends. Rojo is the most common Persimmon grown in Spain where is known by the name Brillante. It is routinely treated with carbon dioxide so it can be enjoyed while still crisp as it is an astringent variety.

Cape Gooseberry

The cape gooseberry is a low growing shrub with its bright orange berry enclosed in a pale brown parchment-like case called the Cape. The berry is the size of a cherry tomato is very aromatic and full of tiny seeds. They are delicious eaten straight from the Cape or made into gooseberry Jam. They can be added to salads, desserts and cooked dishes, they are delicious stewed with apples or dipped in chocolate. They can also be dried or used in savoury dishes with meats and seafood. The small cucumber beetle also enjoys feasting on the cape gooseberry although they munch only on the leaves. Hand pick any beetles that you see as they are capable of breeding into large numbers very quickly.Weed Warning: This old time favourite is very easy to grow. Garlic - Elephant

This is not a true garlic but forms a bulb consisting of very large, garlic-like cloves. The flavour of these, while not exactly like garlic, is much more similar to garlic than to leeks. The flavour is milder than garlic, and much more palatable to some people than garlic when used raw as in salads. The mature bulb is broken up into cloves which are quite large and with papery skins and these are used for both culinary purposes and propagation. There are also much smaller cloves with a hard shell that occur on the outside of the bulb. These are often ignored, but if they are planted, they will the first year produce a non-flowering plant which has a solid bulb, essentially a single large clove. The plant, if left alone, will spread into a clump with many flowering heads. These are often left in flower gardens as an ornamental and to discourage pests.
