The name Hardy Kiwifruit comes from the fact that this species can tolerate very low winter temperatures and at the same time doesn't require a lot of winter chill, so can be grown over a wide climatic range. Pollinates with a regular male kiwi fruit. Hardy kiwifruits are smaller than normal Kiwifruit, an inch or so long. Fruits are borne in clusters and have smooth, edible skins so can be eaten just like grapes. The hardy kiwifruit has the same emerald-green interior and similar flavor to the grocery store kiwifruit, except that hardy kiwifruits are sweeter.

Pine Nut

An attractive large pine tree that bears cones of edible nuts. These are considered a delicacy in Mediterranean style cooking, due to their sweet, buttery flavour. Trees can be expected to start producing cones from about year 6. But can take longer. Each cone holds about 50 nuts and 100 kg of cones holds about 20 kg of nuts. Grows best in dry cooler areas with excellent drainage. Trees can set nuts on their own, but cones may be poorly filled. Plant two or more to improve nut set.

Ice Cream Bean Mountain

A large attractive tree with spreading branches and lovely white and yellow pompom type flowers. The short pods look similar to a tamarind pod. Surrounding the inedible black seeds is a thick white juicy pulp that tastes very much like vanilla ice-cream. The tree has the added advantage of being nitrogen fixing and is a good choice as a fast growing shade tree.Weed Warning: This is an attractive fast growing legume tree native to Central and South America. Over the last 20 years it has gained popularity in Australia as a nitrogen fixing tree that produces large velvety pods filled with creamy sweet flesh. Its popularity has also generated concerns about its potential to spread, with the main area of concern in NSW from Taree to the Tweed region.
