Dwarf Mulberry - Black

This mulberry has a very low chill factor making it ideal for our subtropical climate. Pruning after fruiting allows it to be kept under 3mtrs, and also encourages multiply cropping throughout the summer. It is best to pick the fruit when ripe, as it doesn't ripen further off the tree. A benefit of a mulberry tree is that the fruit ripens over an extended period of time unlike other fruit that often ripens all at once. The fruits of the black mulberry, considered the tastiest and most versatile of the mulberries are large and juicy with a good balance of sweetness and tartness. The fruit of the dwarf black mulberry is the same as that on the large black mulberry that we all know and love. The fruit is large, resembling a blackberry, sweet and luscious. Tamarind

Of all the fruit trees in the tropics the Tamarind fruit tree is the most widely distributed and appreciated as an ornamental. The sour and fruity taste merges well with the heat of chillies. It gives many South Indian dishes their hot and sour character and their dark colour. In India the tamarind is mostly combined with meat or legumes eg. lentils, chickpeas or beans. The pulp is sold dry and must be soaked before usage. Only the water is then added to the food. Alternatively tamarind extract may be used with the same effect. The tamarind is a slow growing but long lived tree reaching up to 30 metres. It is highly wind resistant with strong graceful branches with rough fissured bark. The fruits look like beans and are borne in great abundance along the new branches. They range from 5-20cm in length and can be from 2-3cm in diameter. The leaves, too, are edible and enjoyed in salads, curries and chutneys. They are known as Chinta chiguru on the Indian subcontinent where they are much loved
Fig - Moreton Bay

This Fig can take two forms, as a magnificent tall spreading tree or as a strangling vine depending on where the seed lands. When the roots finally reach the ground they will start to encircle their host tree until they eventually strangle it and takes it place in the forest. Cedar - West Indian

Fast growing, medium sized tree that is a popular cabinet timber due to its fantastic colouring, it produces fine timber with yellow banding and red-brown stripes. The timber is similar to Australian Red Cedar but the tree is easier to grow. The wood has a strong aroma of onions which is reputed to repel insects such as cockroaches. Tolerant of some frost.
