This is a beautiful tree with large glossy leaves and stunning pendulous flowers. The flowers produce large quantities of nectar which attract lots of wildlife. Cassowary love feeding on the large fruits when in season. Also called the mango pine, this deciduous or semi-deciduous tree is found in New Guinea and Australia chiefly in coastal areas. The glossy leaves tend to be whorled at the ends of the branches, The fragrant white flowers are in long pendulous spikes and appear just prior to the new growth flush. Will grow as far south as subtropical Northern NSW.

Bunya Nut

A handsome large tree for parks and gardens. This extraordinary bush food produces large edible nuts inside large cones. They are delicious roasted or pressure cooked. Then slice them and shuck the kernel and use in a wide range of recipes. The trees produce dense shade and are cold tolerant. A symmetrical pine suitable for container growing when young as they a slow growing to start. Trees take up to 15 years to produce the large cones, which ripen mid summer. No-one should stand or park under one of these at that time, as they fall from a height when ripe. These trees were and still are very important to the cultural practices of First Nations peoples of the East Coast especially southern Queensland, producing bumper harvests every 3 years, drawing peoples to the region to share.

The only selection that is self fertile, producing hairless Kumquat sized fruit. Originating in Japan, this selection will start cropping in its 2nd year. Taste is similar to the normal Kiwifruit. Shrub native to Asia produces small, orange-yellow flowers followed by fruits, 1cm in diameter produced in in open, branched clusters. The soft, fibrous flesh is greenish-white stained with purplish-red near the skin. The flavour is pleasantly acid, somewhat grape-like. The fruits are eaten fresh as dessert, are made into syrup, and extensively employed in the manufacture of soft drinks. After fruiting prune to keep to an attractive shrub to 2mts high.Phalsa during transit may drop some leaves. It is a hardy plant and with acclimatisation in its new location it will respond well and bounce back. It can take 3 weeks for plants to recover from transit stress.

Plum Pine

Attractive rainforest pine that bears seeds on swollen edible stalks - which is the 'plum'. The seeds get darker the riper they are. The purple 'fruit' are grape-like with a sweet, juicy, soft jelly-like pulp with a subtle plum flavour. The slightly resinous fruit can be used for both sweet and savoury recipes. It is an attractive hedge due to its contrasting dark and lime green foliage. The timber is popular in cabinet making. The trees are either male or female so planting 3 or more together will increase your chances of getting both a male and female tree which then allows for pollination and fruit set. They are from an ancient family of trees originating in the time of Gondwana, growing now in the rainforests of the east coast of Australia. The tree grows quite slowly and can take 8-15 years to fruit.
