Yellow Mangosteen

$34.00 ($28.90-$79.00 choose a size)

Yellow Mangosteen is a round fruit with very tart yellow segments. The high acidity makes it ideal for jams and jellies but removing the seed and skin can be time consuming. Easier to grow in the subtropics than the purple mangosteen, but the flavour is altogether different. The tree grows well in full sun and shade. It will tolerate and continue to fruit heavily in drought conditions. The tree is very attractive, with large drooping leaves and a layered form. The fruit can reach 8-10 cm in length and looks highly ornamental when in the tree. Pairs so well with a Miracle Fruit to reduce the acid flavour and bring out the interesting tropical flavours.

Kumquat - Variegated

$46.95 ($34.00-$69.00 choose a size)

A highly ornamental kumquat with variegated foliage. Well suited as a pot specimen. Also known as Calamondin it has acid fruit that is most commonly grown in the Philippine Islands although it is probably of Chinese origin. It is believed to be a natural hybrid, with kumquat in the parentage. In the Philippines it is sometimes called calamonding or calamansi. Calamondin is cold-resistant. The fruits are very small, round, and orange at full maturity. The orange flesh is acidic, juicy, and contains a few seeds. If you are a fan of Kumquats then these will be a great addition to your collection. Calamondin trees flower and set fruit intermittently throughout the year, adding to the decorative appeal of these trees.

Betel Leaf

$19.90 ($16.90-$19.90 choose a size)

The spicy leaves can be eaten raw and cooked. The attractive leaves can be used to wrap tasty foods such as spiced rice and ginger. Requires free draining, moist, fertile soil to grow well. Trellis support advised. Or it can be grown as a dense ground cover. Soaking the leaves in cold water with a little sugar for 2 hours before use subtly alters the flavour. The white flower spikes develop into a small fruit that can be eaten. Betel leaf has many traditional medicinal uses.Betel leaf is an evergreen, perennial creeper to 90 cm. It has shiny heart-shaped leaves with small white flower spikes. It prefers a rich, well-drained soil with partial shade. It likes to be kept moist but does not tolerate water-logging. Frost will damage the leaves but not kill the plant once it is well established. It makes a good ground cover under trees in subtropical and tropical areas. It grows vigorously in the right position and because of its habit of suckering can be difficult to remove. It can be grown successfully in colder areas in a hanging basket or large pot and moved to a warm, sheltered position in winter. Betel leaf is a different plant to Betel pepper Piper betle, which is chewed with betel nut.
