The rind is very thick and when the peel is candied peel it is used in the food industry and as a common ingredient in fruit cakes, plum pudding, sweet rolls and candies. If fully ripened on the tree the fruits are very aromatic and yellow, they can be placed in a bowl to scent a room. Sensitive to frost, the foliage and fruit can also be damaged by intense heat and drought. Citron has been cultivated since ancient times, and is still much revered today for cultural and religious reasons.

While the tree may not produce fruit in colder regions, the leaves are quite cold hardy and can tolerate winter conditions. May require protection from frosts when young. I have mine growing in a pot on the patio. On the coldest days it comes indoors, otherwise I have it protected with a plastic cover. As the weather warms it gets lots of sun. It's been 1.5yrs now.
