Anyone got French Sorrel? (forum)

16 responses

I miss my French Sorrel clump. It provided constant lovely large bright green acid tasting leaves that gave salads such a lift, & when added to soup recipes french sorrel was a valuable ingredient, in fact the French use it as the main ingredient in one soup.
However I can not find it in WA. Does anyone have any seeds, or root cuttings they can spare, please???? I am happy to pay or swap.

Snottie

try looking for them in Asian shop, as there are plenty of them here in Sydney. Sorry I used to have them but the pesty slugs loves them, so I had given up on them and let the slugs won.

Hi Jantina, I have been able to source a few ocas, but they were very small & dried somewhat, but hoping to get something out of them come springtime. Whatever you send will be greatly appreciated, but please make sure there is no soil. A sealing type plastic bag containing damp spagnum works well with cuttings, root clumps etc.
Do you have my address or email?

I will try and get it off Julie Firth, when we eventually get swapping, if the big Q stops you.

Good luck with Oca in WA.
I found it just couldn't handle the heat of summer. not happy at all

im sure ive seen french sorrel in WA. Its should do very well.
Its available through a line of herbs sold in many large retailers in the east as 'Renaissance herbs'

bare rooted, washed and packed in spaghnum would be the only way
ive never seen it set seed. is it sterile? anyone know?

My FS in Vic.would send up quite a few heads( never saw flowers) & I just removed them. The clump itself would spread sufficiently making it very easy to spadeslice side growths for potting up & giveaways.
There are "renaissance herbs' in Bunnings but FS isnt one of them. Maybe the big Q think it would spread like that invasive English sorrel with those damned elastic roots!

Charles c s, what seeds am I sending you? Is it red tamarillo, african cucumber, red dragonfruit. yellow pear toms, mini red caps or all of the above?
I can also dry some exquisite rose flowered strawberry seeds. They produce small plants with tasty wedge shaped red fruit.

Ah, red tom, african cuc, and the rose flowered straw sounds interesting. I just have that common "Fragoo" rose flowered strawb at the moment. (dont worry if yours is the same)

I have the yellow/orange tamarillo here but I havent got the seeds out/dried them yet.
Anything else you might want when i send that seed?

Yes french sorrel produces a lovely bright green slightly curling broad lance shaped leaf up to 25 cms, but the younger leaves are more tender. The stems are quite long & whitish.
The English sorrel has dark green to maroon leaves of an unusual shape like the moulded arrowhead on a wrought iron fence,& only grow to 8 or 9 cms. The plant is prostrate & fast spreading with yellow roots that often spring soil into your eyes when trying to remove them. Its a ^*!#~ of a weed!!

Yep I have both sorrels here and your descriptions match them. So you agree it's safe to plant out snottiegobble?

You should be perfectly safe with FS. The other sorrel needs to be eradicated because the seeds can be spread by birds & it has fast spreading roots & stolons kinda like mint.
Enter the dragon, apply Glyphosate 360 its a lot cheaper than Roundup & just as potent.

Thanks for the tip snottie but it's taken me years to wean my hubby off his addiction to using that stuff. One whiff and he'd be wanting to spray it everywhere again. I even have a tombstone that says " In memory of all the beautiful plants that died at the hands of my husband!"

Oh dear, maybe you should get some & hide it! he obviously was spraying on windy days & didnt realise how potent it is. There is a rope stick you can buy where you only need to touch the plants you dont want with it. The rope absorbs the Glypho out of a little container.
