Black Boy Cherry (forum)

Hi, I was wondering if anyone grows Black Boy Cherry out there and if you could tell me what the fruits taste like please. I bought a Black Boy yesterday from the market out of impulse, came home googled search for more info but couldn't find any on the internet; I was curious to know the growth habit, quality of fruits etc.
I also noticed that besides Black Boy, many other cherry varieties are also called Prunus avium, it's so confusing. I would really appreciate your input.
Many thanks,
May

All cherries are prunus avium.
black boy cherry is a made up name to sell whatever variety is too dark to export.

Thanks John for your reply. Does that mean that I should expect Black Boy to have the same characteristics as the rest of the cherries such as Sunburst, Stella etc?

Only in that they are all prunus avium. The different varieties all have their own characteristics e.g.early or late fruiting, dark or lighter colour, and whether it needs a pollinator or not e.g.Stella is supposed to be self fertile but can pollinate other cherries. Louis Glowinski says of Blackboy, large dark red fruit, firm and juicy. Large stone. Strong tree, heavy bearer. Suggested pollinators,Moss Early,Bing,Napoleon. Cheers.

Thank you very much Jantina, just the information I need. I am so mad with myself for buying it without doing more research. I don't have enough room in my garden for another tree. I just assumed that BlackBoy is self fertile. :((

May ,there might well be a suitable pollinator for your tree in the neighborhood and that would be all you need.Alternatively you could get a Stella which is a fairly small tree and a suitable pollinator and keep it in a pot, you only need a bit of blossom.Or graft a branch of a pollinator to your Blackboy. All is not lost.

Thanks Jantina. Grafting sounds like a good idea however I haven't got a clue how to do it so I think getting a Stella and plant it in the pot might be the way to go. Do they need to be planted side by side? In the mean time I will check out my neighbourhood to see if they are suitable pollinators.

May, no they do not need to be side by side, anywhere in the yard will do providing of course it is a spot in the sun where the Stella is happy. There are lots of sites that give good grafting advice, try www.treesofjoy.com.

May. my most humble apologies, the pollinating variety should have read Moss Early also a compact tree. Stella was a pollinator for the tree listed above in the book and I read it in too much of a hurry. Hope this does not cause you too many problems. Jantina

Thanks Jantina and anon. I bought Stella few days ago and intend to plant both Blackboy and Stella in the same planting hole/duo planting. I hope it'll work out alright.
