May starts with ... Hi, I was wondering if anyone grows Black Boy Cherry out there and if you could tell me what the fruits taste like please. I bought a Black Boy yesterday from the market out of impulse, came home googled search for more info but couldn't find any on the internet; I was curious to know the growth habit, quality of fruits etc. I also noticed that besides Black Boy, many other cherry varieties are also called Prunus avium, it's so confusing. I would really appreciate your input. Many thanks, May | About the Author May Melbourne 20th November 2008 12:23pm #UserID: 1661 Posts: 19 View All May's Edible Fruit Trees |

Jantina says... Only in that they are all prunus avium. The different varieties all have their own characteristics e.g.early or late fruiting, dark or lighter colour, and whether it needs a pollinator or not e.g.Stella is supposed to be self fertile but can pollinate other cherries. Louis Glowinski says of Blackboy, large dark red fruit, firm and juicy. Large stone. Strong tree, heavy bearer. Suggested pollinators,Moss Early,Bing,Napoleon. Cheers. | About the Author Jantina Mt. Jantina says... May ,there might well be a suitable pollinator for your tree in the neighborhood and that would be all you need.Alternatively you could get a Stella which is a fairly small tree and a suitable pollinator and keep it in a pot, you only need a bit of blossom.Or graft a branch of a pollinator to your Blackboy. All is not lost. | About the Author Jantina Mt. May says... Thanks Jantina. Grafting sounds like a good idea however I haven't got a clue how to do it so I think getting a Stella and plant it in the pot might be the way to go. Do they need to be planted side by side? In the mean time I will check out my neighbourhood to see if they are suitable pollinators. | About the Author May Melbourne 21st November 2008 10:06am #UserID: 1661 Posts: 19 View All May's Edible Fruit Trees |
Jantina says... May, no they do not need to be side by side, anywhere in the yard will do providing of course it is a spot in the sun where the Stella is happy. There are lots of sites that give good grafting advice, try www.treesofjoy.com. | About the Author Jantina Mt.
