Fruity Tooty starts with ... Hello, thanks for taking the time to read this. Recently I brought a two Black Sapote trees from Bunnings. Pretty sure the are seedlings and are about 1 meter high. I plan on planting them in the ground soon, but at the moment have moved them to large pots to grow. I didn't know too much other than they are nicknamed Chocolate Pudding Fruit and even though they don't taste chocolaty to me, they are still really yummy! So while researching how to best care for my trees, I have learnt there are male and female sapotes that need to be cross pollinated. I have no idea if mine are male, female or hermaphrodite. The plant tag doesn't say anything about the sex or cross pollination, only that they will fruit and how to care for them. I'm ringing Bunnings to clarify when they are next opening, but just wondering if anyone else is familiar with Bunnings Black Sapotes? Thank you. | About the Author tooty_fruity FNQ 26th April 2014 7:12pm #UserID: 9874 Posts: 5 View All tooty_fruity's Edible Fruit Trees |

BJ says... If you have two you will get fruit. Chances of getting a non fruiting (male only) BS is slim. To get two would be extremely unlikely. Many will only put out male flowers for a few years, then put out both male and female flowers when the tree is more mature. The same is true of some other species. Grafted ones are best, but seedlings should produce alright fruit. | About the Author Theposterformerlyknownas Brisbane 26th April 2014 10:07pm #UserID: 3270 Posts: 1552 View All Theposterformerlyknownas's Edible Fruit Trees |

MaryT says... Well I have read through the long thread about them and there seems to be a large number of people having trouble with it so I presume it's going to be difficult, especially in Sydney. Still I will do my best and see what happens. It is only tiny at the moment. It might not turn out to be like its parent either, even if it survives. They are dear friends who gave the fruit to me to try for the first time. | About the Author MaryT Sydney 27th April 2014 2:17pm #UserID: 5412 Posts: 2066 View All MaryT's Edible Fruit Trees |
