Blueberry Cultivars

    24 responses

Tommoz starts with ...
Can someone recommend a good Southern Highbush to complement my O'Neal, Legacy and Blueberry Burst? Location gets afternoon shade and 500 chill hours. Really want Sweetcrisp/South Moon/Springwide but that seems years away. I guess it is a choice between Misty, Sharpblue, Gulf Coast and Reveille(?).

For those looking for info on cultivars I have come across quite a good resource with all the chill hours: http://www.smallfruits.org/Blueberries/production/06bbcvproc_Nov0206.pdf

Perhaps someone can explain this enigma: rabbiteyes need greater protection from frost than Southern high bushes according to all guides. This seems counter-intuitive because rabbiteyes require more winter chilling and ripen later than the SHBs. Also said to be hardier.

Rabbiteyes are a separate, naturally occurring species. Southern High bush are a man made cross with no natural occurrence, methinks.

It is said never to use nitrates on blueberries. But I guess they know what they are doing putting in 12% ammonium nitrate.

I contacted the people at OzPeach/Earlyblue who bred B Burst and they told me. Also it is out of Florida, known for breeding all the Souther Highbush types.

Burst is said to have a super long season, but I'm not convinced. It seems to have two crops, rather than a super long season. Mine cropped quite well but was over quite quickly whereas other cvs are still cropping. However burst is pumping out quite a few new flowers...

I will get a Sharpblue and Misty when they become available, local nurseries waiting on more stock to arrive.

Sweetcrisp is a legendary variety in America known for having a very firm almost crunchy texture and for being very sweet. South Moon, Sante Fe, Springwide and Springhigh are all southern highbushes out of Florida that rate really high. I am currently trying to track these down as I know which Australian company has the licence.

None of those varieties are commercially grown in Australia. So it's unlikely that you'll find a grower who'll propagate a couple of plants that they have paid a hefty sum to privately import.

You can contact Moondara, who sold Magnolia for $16.50 until recently but now they are sold out according to their web order form.

You have to factor in how advanced the plant might be.

I have several blueberry varieties in Sydney for comparison. While Sharpblue has a good taste, it tends to produce smaller and fewer berries in time and so is rather disappointing. Gulfcoast on the other hand is consistently producing a very good crop of fairly large berries, and they taste quite good PROVIDED one is patient and waits till they are fully ripe - i.e. black and swollen large. Otherwise, they won't be sweet enough.

Thanks for commenting Edward.

I'd be interested to know what rabbiteyes you have too. Climax, Premier, Maru? I read that Powderblue and Tifblue require about 600 chill hours which I don't get. Then again they apparently fruit well in Northern NSW so who knows.
Which ones have the 'gritty' texture and does it bother you?
