Can tree prune itself ? (forum)

DarrenSiemsen starts with ...
I have come to know that tree can even prune itself. Like if they really need the sunlight for further parts it automatically prune itself. I do not get it how a tree can tell by itself that which part is required to prune and what kind of size it should prune ?
