I am really keen in growing few coconuts in Perth.
I can order online plants form Brisbane.
But how do we manage them during winter?
Do we need green house to keep the leaves and roots warm.
But then other palms grown in Perth why not this ?
is there any expert ideas?

There is one growing on the Leschenault foreshore here deepani (Bunbury) It's a big old one - don't know if it fruits tho - I haven't been here long enuf' - it's in public open space too - so the council likely chops of any fruit anyway..
ps - some eastern states folks don't realise that Bunbury has the most southern mangroves in the souther hemisphere...??
What does that tell u about our coastal WA climate... ;-)

Not meaning to brag, NZ has mangroves growing naturally as south as the Bay of Plenty, a similar latitude to Melbourne.

Some stunted Avicennia marina in Bunbury,S.A.,Vic and the bay of plenty doesn't really indicate warmth. It isn't like the diverse, tall and complex mangrove forests of the tropics.Getting coconuts to fruit south of the Qld border or SW West Aust would be a stretch.

classic quote in an old palm book .. supposedly from Linneaus ..
'Man was meant to dwell in the tropics , and feast off the fruit of palms ' goes on about being forced to eat flesh in colder climates ;-)

Coconuts can grow in Perth. This is a guy who owns a landscaping company who has had success. He is a regular on the palmtalk forum, Tyrone is his name. Find him online for some tips

He built a special heated plastic house for it every winter for several years , and is an expert grower . Not many people would go to the trouble that he did .
You might get one to grow for many years , but getting it to fruit ..... thats another matter.

He knows of other coconuts that are growing successfully for many years in people's gardens in Perth that haven't had that attention.
