Figs yellow, soft and inpalatable.

I have this brown turkey fig tree in a large pot and doing very well. Recently the green fruits started to turn yellow and soft. After plucking and cutting them open, the fruits are not palatable at all...dry like a bone within.

I have eaten figs given by my friend and they tasted really nice and fleshy. Anyone has any idea what has gone wrong? This morning one of the yellow fig actually dropped off the tree on its own. I thought that means it is ripe?

Could be that the tree is still too young to make great fruit, and that they're not yet ripe.
I pulled most of the fruit off my young Black Genoas so they could concentrate on growth. The few left will probably be rubbish!

Hi au0rey,

It could be insufficient watering, I think.

That's what to mine a few months' back but it did not change colour to all yellow. It was still green with slight yellow when it fell. I did the same thing like you and cut into half and it was still not formed yet.

So I increased the watering and have managed to eat to full sized fruits. Btw, my fig is a white genoa type.

Hope this helps! Cheers

Hi au0rey - that's interesting as my brown turkey produced normal fruit right off and ever since. I have seen fig trees in vacant lots bear well with no care or water at all. But mine (and those) are in the ground. Is it getting enough sun to ripen the fruit?

All I can suggest is lots of sun and maybe try very weak seaweed feeding every week. Try googling fig trees in pots - there are american gardening sites that have heaps of info on this. It may be something to do with their weather but they seem to be into po culture.

Thanks everybody! I think the fig tree gets enough sunlight and water...the fruits are totally not fleshy though I can see the 'flowers' within when cut. There are new fruits growing and the leaves look really healthy. Thanks for all your advice/suggestions!

Remember the fig tree I have? It has produced a dozen fruits but were inedible and dry. Recently I had two which were a little fleshier and pink. Could it be more rain that's why? Very exciting to have figs growing in pots. I am going to chop this tall slender trunk to a short trunk once winter comes.

And my short and stouty Flemings' brown turkey tree has also produced several figs in its pot. Yippee! Figs can bear in pots!

My figs are just like yours, tree in ground on 5th year, had great set but are dry inside, soft and beginning to fall. I'm going to water more tho they get 8 hours of drip per week and we had a wet for us winter. I'm really disappointed as so wanted to have great tasting figs. Usually the fall crop is better and our spring has been cool so maybe that's the problem. Any ideas?

Hi,

I have planted my White Adriatic fig in a pot. It did produce fruit early last summer but like au0rey's, it was dry inside and unedible.

The second crop (late summer) was better when I watered it more often. It was pink inside and the flesh was quite sweet.

So my opinion is that it needs more watering during dry fruiting months. Hope this helps!

Can someone help me please. I have a 20 year old fig tree that produces an abundance of fruit but the fruit doesn't form properly and flesh is spongy inside. It fruits twice a year but like au0rey it is not edible. I have another fig in a different area of the garden that is bearing beautiful fruit. Does anyone know why this is happening I've included a pics.
Your help would be appreciated.
