Does anyone know if a grapefruit could be grafted onto a kaffir lime or vice versa? I don't think it would work

First they are closely related, so no issues like trying to graft unrelated (ie apple on peach). Generally should be able to get buds or grafts to take, and sometimes one method will work better than others. Citrus can have long term compatability problems with different combinations, also a big difference in vigour will cause one to overgrow the other. At a guess, id say KL should graft onto GF ok. Any reason you're thinking of doing this ?

Im starting to have second thoughts on if it is a grapefruit. When it first started it took of produced some nice fruit and then died. I never checked if it was grafted and now the rootstock is growing back and has been for about two years. Can you plz identify what rootstock this may be and if it was even originally grafted.

The leaves have 3 leaflets (ie trifoliate).
Doesnt look like P.trifoliata, looks like Citrange or Swingle, most likely Citrange rootstock. Will be fine for Kaf Lime, I would cut out the dead GF and re bud 2 or 3 of the biggest suckers.

I get confused by hardwood/softwood too. I consider all citrus to be hardwood. You can turn it, comes up very nice actually, and makes good boxes and canes. Macadamia is beautiful wood also, very hard. Not good to for firewood though, takes a lot of heat to burn it.

I always use clonex purple for striking everything, which is supposed to be for hardwood stuff only, but it's very good for striking figs.

I think theres 2 different things, softwood timber, pine+some rainforest
hardwood timber, Eucalypt etc
Then there's softwood cuttings+hardwood cuttings. In the pic the branch with the stripey bark is closer to hardwood, the closest to the lens is more softwood, semi hardwood. Citrus probably arent as clear cut as the deciduous species.
