Gum blossom (forum)

Has anyone kept an eye on that old bushman's (possibly aboriginal) saying that heavy blossom in summer means a hard (wet) winter?

Two or three years ago, the trees were groaning with blossom. and it was a good winter in WA. Last year there was very little, and we had a dry winter.

So far this year the blossom, mostly Marri and Karri, is pretty sparse. I hope this doesn't mean another dry winter. We really need the water.

I'd love to hear your comments.

Got good eucalypt blossom up here Julie - and guess what - it's actually raining right now! Hooray.. :)))

Apparently we have a 60% chance of a wetter winter (according to BOM) - or something like that...?

Edit: ps - I am thinking of the Illyaries (?) here (one with the big red cap and yellow flower?) they are quite loaded this year. Hey - we are forecast possible "heavy" rain 2day - I am so excited! Haven't seen that word for....?maybe 2yrs..?

There's a massive Euc bloom here at the moment, I was blaming the wet Summer, It's the equal best or second best flower show in in 15 years. I'm not sure how the Winter was following the last one but it was about 3 years ago and that I think was a very wet Winter. I'll pay attention this time.

For an idea of just how wet this Summer is, I normally start watering every other day starting in January and before every hot spell after October.

This season I've only used the hose for actual watering other than when planting something... once and also have the most growth all around I've ever had in 12 years, even last night was steady rain from 10pm till the morning that I didn't expect (I was going to water today but now I wont)

Maybe they are like poincianas - which flower more profusely in the spring/summer after a dry winter?

(ps - according to G.A mag - poincianas won't flower well in Gero'..LOL! I have not seen them flower better in Cairns even!?)

Red cap gums all around town are looking very promising also. The first street tree we admired in Capel 2 years ago so planted 2.
Tuarts are also particularly heavy with blossom specially the young ones & the branches close to the ground. The wind is a b-gg-r tho, blown the weathercock off my weather station & broke one of the revolving cones!
