Recently planted new Elberta peach and peacharine trees. Pruned as directed on label. Both have sprung into action with lots of leaves and flowers but the ends of each branch are beginning to turn black and die. Please help!

I think you left too much of the twig from the terminal bud to the end . It should be a sloping cut45 degrees ,longer at the bud , and leave about 5mm spare at the end. But do not worry it will turn out fine

Sounds like die back. The sap is not reaching the end of the branch.Just cut it back to the closest point to the next bud growth.

I had a similar thing happen to my small peach tree in summer. When I pruned off a couple of tips I noticed the stem was hollow. I split and peeled the stem back on the tree and found a grub. This is the lava of the Tip Moth. I cut all the wilting and dead tips off, back until the branches were solid. I squashed what I cut off. Over the following couple of months I kept an eye on the tree and spotted and removed the occasional wilting/blackened tip.

The tree continued to grow well and now 6 months later it is happy and loaded with young fruit.

I think this ‘tipping’ made the tree a bit bushier. I want to keep it small so this was no problem.

Hi,
I planted a peacharine tree at least 5 years ago. I have not eaten any fruit from it at all so far so am very disappointed. Last year, there were lots of flowers but only saw 1 fruit which was starting to grow really well. We went away one w/end n when I came back, the fruit was gone, didn't see any seed so presumed bird must have eaten it. This year, there were again lots of flowers but I still don't see any fruits appearing after the flowers are gone. So does this mean, I won't see any fruit this year? In May08 this year, I bought a donut peach tree and planted it 1 feet apart from the peacharine (duo planting) thinking that it may help with cross pollination. The doughnut peach is already sprouting 9 mini fruits about 2 cm big. How can I protect this fruit to make sure I really get to have a chance to eat a fruit from my garden before bird or whatever bugs get to it first? Anyway I was really surprise to see it bearing fruit after only a few months. Anyone got any tips on my barren peacharine tree?

I have also just planted a peach tree (alberta) which is also dropping its leaves. They are turning a reddy colour before dropping. I am new to Victoria and do not know if this is a normal thing. any advise would be much appreciated.

Red leaves and early drop is a sign of phosphorous deficiency.

Hi Libby, just saw your post and wonder if it is too late to reply..For my peach tree, it was rather big (about 3m tall by 4m wide but I managed to use netting to cover the whole tree to avoid birds. You must cover and secure it in such a way that birds cannot get into the branches via the trunk. Possums are the main problem for my area but proper netting should help a lot.

It is tedious covering a large tree but the efforts are worth it. Wrapping with paper bags/plastic bags did not help as possums just rip them off and feed on the peaches.

They did not adress your problem of the barren tree Libby. I have the same problem. Not a lot of flowers this year, and the leaves began from the bottom and slowly developed higher. I believe all of the flowers turned to leaves except two. Is this possible?? Can anyone help me please? It got watered well, and the leaves are healthy.

My bro-in-law who visited me a few months ago and is a very experience gardener told me that Peaches and all stone fruits do not grow on old stems. Fruits only appear on new shoots so he pruned the old shoots so new ones will grow. So behold I did get about 6-8 fruits finally. I will do this again next year to see if I get more fruits.

This year, I say more fruits on the dougnut peach. So that was great. What was not so great is the fact that not only have I got to deal with birds and possums but also the family dog! I know that for a fact coz I caught him red handed with an unripe one in his mouth which he quickly chewed up.

Haha Libby, what u are going through with that peach tree was what i was going through with mine before..birds and possums...and my dog..i think the lower fruits cannot be protected from doggy but the ones on the top...how about netting? if the tree isnt so big like mine, you can do a good netting over...i even used well-perforated clear plastic bags and stapled them over the fruits. That gave me a good number of yummy peaches for myself!!!
