Lychees in Sydney? (forum)

HI ,
I love the taste of lychees and like the idea of the Salathiel variety with it's large fruit and small stone. Does anyone know if I'd be able to grow it in far northern Sydney (~400 chill hrs)? I have a longan that has flowered the last 2 years but not set fruit.
Thanks

I believe you can make it work, but it won't be easy. Cold tolerance is the biggest issue and Glenorie gets about 800 chill hours.
The best variety would be Bosworth 3 and a forum member here mentioned that someone succeeded with this in Fairfield.
Try to plant it in a location that will give it a microclimate. Next to a shed that will radiate heat for instance. Sheltered position would be helpful (e.g. large tree overhead) to protect from frost.

Hi Linda,
I grow Salathiel, Kwai Mai pink and wai chee down in waterfall, they all grow well and have flowers in spring but are too small to set fruit at this stage.

Thanks Tommoz - I am actually north of Glenorie and higher up so we don't get as much frost here. I have a pawpaw near the house that produces more than I can eat.....

Thanks Waterfall - do you get much frost there in Waterfall? Are the trees near a shed or something as suggested by Tommoz?

Hi Linda, I have never seen any frost but we have only lived here 3 years. We are on top of a hill so I doubt it will ever happen.
I have my wai chee is in the front yard, it is protected from westerly wind by the house and southerly wind by a fence.
The other 2 are planted together in one hole down the back. They are in a sheltered area which is protected from wind on 3 sides and there is also a lot of pavers to soak up the sun.
Lots of sun and no wind will give the best microclimate. If you are growing paw paw then I don't think you will have any trouble with lychee. You should avoid the more tropical varieties though.

Hi,
If you read the replies to my post it seems like you might. Macquarie Park is low down but it quite urban so it may be warmer and so suitable.

I recommend the Kwai Mai Pink or sometimes called Bosworth 3 for Sydney.
Both our Salathiel and Wai Chee have died whereas the Kwai mai Pink has grown constantly and has now doubled in size.

I'm in postcode 2176 and my bosthworth 3 is thriving. Its my favourite tree in the garden even though I have other exotic trees like longans and persimmons. The texture and taste of eating a lychee freshly picked from the tree is amazing. It did nothing for first 5 years so you have to be patient.
