There were reports of flower panicles appearing in the mango plantations in the Northern Territory over a month ago and the growers were really happy about that. I don't know how your climate compares with the NT but it might be worth doing a bit of checking out before you remove the panicles. I read somewhere recently that flower panicle emergence may be related to the time of last pruning.

My tree has yet to flush in Brisbane. I am unaware if the different varieties would be early, mid season or late and that may also be a factor. Perhaps someone with more mango knowledge can offer advice.

Perhaps I can help ,sometimes one tree in the carina area along meadowlands rd flowers abundantly, don't know the cultivar but looks similar to KP, but the leaves are different. My Kwan wont be long before it starts to send out panicles, also the florigan can somertimes be early the trouble with early flowering early in Brisbane is the cold morning temps, anything below 10c and fruit will abort, due to unfertilized embryo. Whenever this happens I always pull them off and they reflower weeks later when the morning temps have risen.

My Nam Doc Mai which is under 1 metre has pushed out a large panicle and has numerous little mangoes on it. Bought it from Daley's around six weeks ago and still in little pot along with Kwan, Valencia Pride, Artulfo and Florigon. My two KPs here in Mackay always flower later than other trees around us which are in bloom now. This winter I will spray with Calcium Nitrate to speed them along and get a bigger crop.

Not Totally latidude related David - see my NDM on my edibles page - was flowering a month ago and let it go for a couple weeks - it did flower but didnt like cold - parts were going black so removed. Another formed on another branch and cut half off and started spraying with copper spray to stop any Anthracnose and still looks ok - only an experiment till spring comes when i will really let it flower - My 2y/o Palmer still has a 1kg+ mango on it slowly reddening - will pick whent shows more colour - Love to know where I can get Calcium Nitrate? :)

Hi Markmelb, your collection is remarkable, Palmer is considered a late variety, truly yours is a late late late variety. Well done. Up here in Brissie NDM will often throw out flowers to, but because of the cold nights dosnt often set till later in the year. Do you shelter your tender plants.

David - I have some crop protection cloth on North side of house to creat a micro climate for Lychee and Sapodilla - but we are getting 30 - 40kt North Westerlies that rip down East side of house at present - plants are handling ok but need protection when its 40c plus.
South wind protection quite good with a 2.5mt brick wall - garden only getting turbulence then. In fact we had better weather than Toowoomba today - there ya go :)

I can also report that my NDM has flowering pinnacles. It's the 2nd one in autumn/winter. Very weird. Don't think I will get any mangos from it though.

Markmelb I bought the calcium nitrate from Bunnings. It is in a box called Hydrangea Pinking by Manutec. There are two pkts. In the box and the white powder one is the calcium nitrate 300grms. You are only supposed to use the calcium nitrate on older mango trees not the young small ones. My KPs are quite large now and would benefit from it. I believe the application rate is 10grms per litre spraying both leaves and wood. Then a second application a few days later. Only spray on days when rain is not forecast.

Sorry Markmelb but that ratio of powder to water may not be correct. I read that spraying tomatoes for flower end rot was 4 tablespoons per gallon which works out to be around 1 tablespoon per litre. Anyway that is the one I am going to use. It is recommended that you spray early morning or late afternoon if sunny. Preferably an overcast day would be ideal so as not to burn the leaves. You may see some action happening around 10-14 days afterwards.

I am glad i am not the only one surprised around here,i was looking for one of my missing chooks and checked under my biggest KP as that is where they all usually hide and not only found the chook but heaps of new panicles that are just opening, that was the last thing i expected to find as it is only June.
So i checked my smaller Mango trees i have planted around my block and found that the Banana, Valencia Pride, R2E2,
Florigon etc etc, and a couple of smaller KP's are all doing the same, so it looks like most of them have lost the plot and not just the larger KP which was full of leaf flush only a 3 or 4 months ago, i know this winter has been mild so far but i did not expect flowering this early.
I was considering cutting the flowers of
as suggested in one of Daley's video's and hoping it would flower again later when there is less chance of excess rain, but with so many of the trees starting the flowering process i guess i will just have to "go with it" and hope for the best and reschedule my carefully planned out fertilizing program to start now!!

Sorry Markmelb that was earlier photo from the end of last summer which was only a few moths ago believe it or not, some new one's taken this morning should be here (i hope)
Night time temps are around 5c at the moment and day time around 20-25c, none of my 20 odd mangoes are on retic as i learned that lesson several years ago when i forgot to turn it off in winter and they all got anthracnose when they flowered and i lost most of my crop so now they get watered by hand most of the time so i can check to see how dry the soil is.
I use bore water only on all my tree's and plants around the block which is also drinkable so no problems there, and i mulch big time (very important i cannot believe how much better they have grown with mulch)and i use pea straw and the occasional sea weed if i get motivated to go down the beach as plenty of mulch traps the water in and i give them one big drink instead of lots of smaller one's as the mulch keeps the ground damp for several days in summer and it appears to attract a lot of worms as well so it must be a good thing, i even use news paper if i get a lot laying around and mix in the sweeping of the floor in the chook pen occasionally so it all adds up.

Hi mojo - Thats a huge bag of Ca(NO3)2 for $24 - will have to get the pinking kit as dont need that much.
Whats the Mango in pic6 with the gigantic pannicle?
My Nam Doc Mai has suffered with some 5c temps so now bring in at night - wasnt affected last winter and cant remember if I brought in or not but will be cutting back some of last summers good growth - such a shame but a couple stems are not black and may flower.
The Palmers newest stems are quite red and unaffected by same cold events.
My old grafted KP is quite unaffected but a seedling Bowen gets hit on a cople stems but not all - too big now to bring in - LOL
