I would like to grow a mango tree in Wollongong, NSW [Illawarra district].

Can anyone recommend a variety that does well in this area & also is resistant to the common diseases of anthracnose & black spot?

Average min temps in winter are 6 to 7 degrees and average max in winter is 18 degrees.

Not sure about Wollongong as I'm in Brisbane. Currently I'm growing Kwan mango in pot. Daleys describes it as excellent resistant to disease. I bought mine from Daleys just 2-3 months back, plant is only 1.5 ft height and already flowering (I'll be removing it to promote growth)

Just spoke to someone at Birdwoods nursery in Nambour , they inform me that dwarf mangoes due for release in September ,roughly 10 cultivars will be on offer, my advise ,get in quick if you are after a particular variety.

Hi Don ,Having lived in Sydney from 79 to 85, you could try something like Florigon or Glenn, each has some built in genetic resistance to anthracnose a fungal disease mangoes are prone to in wet climatesd , mangoes generally prefer dry climate at flowering time and Sydney generally is not dry in spring hence the problem. Do some investigating even the Daleys website has some good info on varieties. Good luck.

Growers here have also said Haden is a good one for cold tolerance and fruit set, as it will flower repeatedly until the condidtions are right, then set fruits. The fruit isnt what I'd call top teir though. Keitt likes the cold, but likes it dry and can be a bugger of a tree to get growing into a nice shape.
