Marcotting (forum)

Ken starts with ...
I am interested in marcotting an old variety avocado tree. Would like to hear from anyone who has done this - just looking for any tips or ideas. I have done lychee marcotts with great success but have not heard of anyone marcotting avos.

I'd say you could marcott avo trees, I have had some success, but the damn cyclone actually broke the marcott off!

What I done was, actually ringbark the branch you want to marcott, say remove about 15 to 20mm of bark, wrap some moist sphagnum moss around this, then cover this with alfoil. Tie some string or wire around this to hold it in place.
Mine was just starting to produce roots, after about 4 months, but the cyclone snapped it off.

Keeping the sphagnum moss moist is the trick. Also, it could take 6 months or more before you could remove the marcott.

What you could also do, grow an avocado seed from a fruit bought at the shop, then graft a piece of the tree you want to preserve, onto the seedling. And now is a good time to do this :-)

It would be interesting to know what sort of root system a large marcotted Avocado tree would be like. Are they not marcotted commecially because of the fibrous root system? Or is it because of poor strike rate?
Id like to know more.
I know they marcott Lychees which grow into huge trees very succesfully and are very strong. Hmmmm, there s a huge beautiful tasting avocado tree hanging over my son s fence in town. I wonder if I could take a large marcott say, diameter of 50mm or larger? Ive marcotted other trees in the past but only smallish branches. I saw a segment on GA where they struck large 100mm+ diameter saplings successfully.

The avo branch that I had some success with marcotting was ~ 15mm dia, and was ~ 1 year old wood. BTW, I now have this in a pot of sphagnum moss,
and it hasn't died yet, so it might even take :-)

I thought 50mm dia would be too big, but you never know. Can you 'borrow' some smaller branches as well?

I'd give it go, especially this time of the year. This is the time (up here), when they graft avocados.
