Does anyone know what this plant is? It came up in a pot with a rose bush, it's old potting mix so I'm not sure whether it's a native or something left over. It's a vine-like succulent with black berries. Thanks, Helen

Hi Helen,
I think that is called a Malabar Spinach. Good plant to have around as it is very healthy for you - if you can get past the slimey texture.

Hi Helen
Looks like a malabar spinach to me. I have uploaded a malabar spinach image for comparison. By the way, its edible if its a malabar spinach.
Happy Gardening :-)

Thank very much, I'll find a suitable spot to relocate instead of ripping out :) It will be interested to see how it compares...

Hi Helen
Just a follow up on your mystery plant. If it's indeed a Malabar spinach just beware because it's an extremely vigorous grower. Don't plant it in the ground. I found it the hard way when it tried to strangle my 15 ft mandarin tree and my 12 ft cherry tree while overrunning my neighbors fence all at the same time. I was pruning it vigorously too every month to no avail. Eventually I have to put it down due to the havoc it has done in my previous property in Melbourne. So just beware of its potential.
If you want to keep it put in a pot to restrict it's growth.
Happy GARDENING :-)

The Malabar spinach is not a heavy weedy vine and doesnt live long enough to be a problem. Sometimes it is confused with the very bad Madeira vine known as Anredera cordifolia that has aerial bulbs and lasts for years growing heavy and densely tangled and quite a job to remove. You have the real Malabar spinach so you have no problem. The little red berries stain your fingers for a while.

I ripped my green and purple ones out as they just go crazy and seedling pop up everywhere. They might be less vigorous outside the wet tropic.

Hi Mike TR
Just for info, they just go rampant (purple) in Melbourne as in the tropics as well. If you stand long enough near them they might strangle you like an anaconda would LOL. I had one of this monster in the ground three years back before finally getting rid of it.
Happy gardening :-)
