Good afternoon,
Does anyone out there have any knowledge or experience with growing olives in the tropics? Is there a variety that is likely to fruit in the Townsville climate?

Thanks,
Simon

Hi, there was a tree in Mt Molloy area, west of Pt Douglass/Julatten. Tree was growing fine, not sure if it fruited.
Mareeba has lots of Italians, they might be growing olives if its possible.
Also other cane growing areas Ayr, Gumlu etc etc. might have growers ?
There are also native Olea in the rainforest, and also other close relatives.

Olives will struggle in Townsville or Mareeba and better off growing Elaeocarpus serratus.

Great suggestion Mike. I don't suppose you know where I could source one of those trees?

Dabai fruit (google buah dabai) is the tropical olive of Borneo.

I grow them but they are still very small.

Yes, agree olives would be difficult in tropics, otherwise they would already be common. That said I found out they are grown west of Mareeba, and that fresh fruit are seen in Cairns market. (assuming these fruit are from these trees) Also trees in other areas of FNQ grow, but never fruit. This could be not enough cold to set flowers or fruit, or too humid/fungus problems.I would be trying to track down
the olive variety that is successful in FNQ, and not other types, also consider if Townsville is similar enough to Marreba to succeed. West of, or higher altitude than Townsville might be better.
