Has anyone ever tried spraying their fruit with a chilli spray or something to deter parrots. Or is this just a wishful idea. The few fruit trees that I have at the moment are being hammered by the parrots.

Chili spray wouldn't work on birds as they are immune to the effects of capsaicin, which we sense as the heat when we eat chillies. The chilli plant's fruit are designed to be spread by birds but to deter mammals whose digestive processes would destroy the seeds.... cockatoos in fact are quite fond of the raw chillis no matter how hot they seem to us.

I tried heavy doses of Lebaycid on my fruit-less apricot tree but they still persist in comming back for the leaves. I thought the smell at least would deter them.

Hell Jason, what are they cooking up this time in town? Weve just had nearly a week of smoke ( very slight) from bushfire down south, but it affected my mate`s breathing pretty bad! I suppose the undertakers in Portland will be busy soon ??

There's some toxic sludge they use at the Alcoa Smelter in a tank down at the harbour and it sprung a leak. It's leaking about 5 tons an hour they reckon, in total it must have leaked 300 or 400 tons by now. From a .... 40,000? ton tank or was that 400,000 in anycase the ship that dropped it off there a few days ago is on the way back so they can remove it :P. The ship is supposed to arrive on Wednesday. The sludge is 200c so they are just squirting water on it to make it go hard and lessen the fumes.

In the meantime they blocked off the area around the downtown and harbour/beach

So sorry mate, & for everyone in town!
It was a lovely beachfront for a cuppa & tappas. All those businesses will go for compensation I hope?

Thanks for all the help guys, not sure what I am going to do with the rascals. I wonder if a air riffle will make them think twice.

Some local bright spark has discovered that major mitchell parrots (at least) are deterred by garlic :)

Reported in our local paper recently that garlic sprays now being tested on several building where the cockies are causing the most damage - and it is deterring them.

(we get a plague a visiting M.M's every summer...looks like a mini war zone in town..lol..)

Might be worth a try.

There used to be a product (can't remember the name) which supposedly deterred birds. It was mostly garlic, chili and dolomite, puffed onto the tree, or maybe the fruit.

This was some years ago,and I never tried it, but cheap enough to make yourself and try it out.
