Hi Geoff - I do find my reds are little bigger as Brendan says.. but the flavour and pulp content is the same (to me) - but in my orchard I have Pan reds n yellows and a "Big Red" - all of the fruit are yellow!!? So i think the yellow must be x-pollinating and dominant.
I also have a pan red seedling in a different location - it's reddish..and an awesome vine.
I have not seen a pan yellow seedling for sale? only grafted..do they exist?

Hi ran - no they don't. The purple is more tangy and intense. The panamas are sweeter and are not as aromatic and strongly flavoured, IMO.
I love them all! My favourite is my Sunshine special - purple, big, lot's of juicy pulp, sweeter than a purple (but not as sweet as Pan's)- but still has that lovely passionfruit aroma/taste.
I don't know it's parentage.

I bought a Red Panama that is loaded with fruit. They are ripening yellow and I just put it down to an incorrect label. Bunnings had both red and yellow. I also planted a Pandora. Seems to be far less vigorous grower and still no flower/fruit.Have lost a lot of fruit due to shrivelling which I understand could be fruit fly strike. Also fruit dropping when partially ripe but still edible. The vine is extremely vigorous and a great screen

Hi Geoff - that's a bit poor isn't it...this has been a common complaint about labelling on Bunnings plants and passionfruit in particular.
Try giving your vines more water if new fruit shrivelling and dropping, along with weak fertiliser (seaweed good, or manure).... I check my vines with a moisture meter now - and end up watering mine every second day - they carry a great deal of fruit n foliage so it makes sense that their water requirements will be higher than your average fruit tree.
I had some shrivelling and dropping of baby fruit during our heatwave - see pic (and I don't have fruit fly here at all) I upped the water and have had no problems since.
My Sunshine special is not as productive either :-( It makes every fruit precious to me...I won't even share those one's with my family!! (well - I figure I do all the hard work - gardener's priveledge..he he

Just collected a bag of Panama red fruits from a vine that is growing up a mango tree. Some of the fruit felt very heavy .
On the scales it went , and 187 gms , 3 fruit was over 500gms . These will go into the local show next week . Ate several smaller older fruits , very sweet and full to the brim .
Have had consistent rain and a warm winter so far , this vine is over 2 years old and was given to me by some locals [ no Bunnings for hundreds of k's ]

Hi trikus - I have this wierd passionfruit that I think may be worthwhile cross breeding with - but I have never done this b4.
Your post got me thinking about it - so I weighed a mutant fruit that dropped this morning (and feels like several of the green ones may even be slightly heavier).
I compared it to several of my pan golds that had dropped and found one the same weight.
They are 110 & 111 grams each - but check out the size difference. The mutant is only 5.5cm across.
When cut they are totally full (no air spaces - pan gold in background)
I have been a p'fruit addict all my life and I have never come across such a heavy passionfruit for it's size?
Imagine if I could get it to the size of the Panama? (it's also very sour...which is a problem too).
Is this a pie in the sky thought - or is this how new breeds come about?
PS - good luck in the show! sounds like fun.

Hybrid passionfruits , yes would be worthwhile to try and improve size and taste .
I have seen a lovely large fruit from a cross between Pananma red and Golden Hawaiian . Colour would be a bonus ,, a bright red fruit may appeal to some .

Nice one trikus...I was amazed by the no-pruning comment..!
Maybe i will hang onto some of my mutant seed for when I am retired and bored!?
As it was supposed to be a P.cinnabarina (sp?) I guess I should make sure it comes true to type first?
(The vine has red new growth and is trouble free and tough as old boots)
