Hi there. A friend wants to use a Reciprocating Saw for pruning all her trees....any problems with one of these? I have never seen or used one (but I am going to supervise the cuts for her..) Thanks!

I bought one a few weeks ago, but havent used it yet. I find a pruning saw is fine for green wood, but doesn't cut through dead wood very well. So I needed something to do the job.

I'll let you know how it goes when I finally get around to using it!

Thanks Julie! :) I had a look at it (it's got a rechargable battery) and looked like it would do an ok job...(and would be nothing like a chainsaw of course - eek!?)
I might road-test it on her eucalypts first and see how it handles...will let u know what I think too! :)

I bought a wolf garten extension pole and a pruning saw . It cuts nearly as fast as a chain saw . Google international traders brisbane and search wolf garten . The super pole extension poles are the best .

The brother bought this from ebay a while ago for $179 delivered to Mackay.
It's made in China of course. It is 6.15m long, with all the extensions, but would be very hard to use at that length! I had trouble using it yesterday with one extension missing :-(
The mechanic mate of mine says with all Chinese engines, chuck the sparkplug away, and put in a NGK plug!
Gee it's handy around here tho :-)
Note the two stainless screws (in pic 1) I had to add, to stop the throttle turning on the shaft. Has a 12 inch bar, pic 3.
Forgot to add, it has a 62cc motor.

Hi, is it a Sanli brand? I bought one a couple of years ago and still going. Quite right, very hard to use due to its length, seems off balance?

No Peter G, it's an MTM brand. Believe it or not, it 'seems' fairly well made, eg, it does have 2 piston rings.
We're thinking about attaching a piece of thin pipe, about a metre long, to the back of the motor, somewhere around the pull starter. Weld a 'foot' on the other end, so it can rest on the ground when using it. It would much easier to use if all the weight was resting on the ground :-)

No jakfruit, brand new with lots of goodies, harness etc, but it is Chinese.
I had to do a few modifications tho,eg, the actual chainsaw would not stay in the upright position, and would turn side-ways :-( But that's all fixed now.

Actually brad, it's not too bad, most of the plastic are only protective covers. We were very pleased to see it has two piston rings, as some machines only have one :-( Jonsered, a cheaper version of Husqvarna, have only one piston ring, crazy.
My brother, who bought it, says it's cheaper than hiring one, or getting the pro's in :-)

interesting, thanks. I bought the wolf pole and saw that Glenn mentioned as well as the lopper attachment that lets you change angle as well. They were bought on the basis of higher upfront cost, but better value. I'd like to get my yard to the point where manual tools can manage it, but I've certainly got some work now where a chainsaw is called for. not sure i can afford or justify the more expensive tools
Is this a 2 stroke? scrap that question: its this one : http://www.agrmachinery.com.au/buy/mtm-62cc-gold-pruning-pole-chainsaw/MTM-PCS-62CC

and some combination tool units. I can see on eBay feedback they seem a bit hit and miss but if anyone here has feedback - please share

Yes brad, where the extension poles join, we drilled and tapped a 5mm socket screw, then drilled a hole in the other end, see pics. (This stops the extension pieces from turning.)
In pic 2, I added the one on the left, (the other two are theirs)

He bought it here: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/NEW-2012-MTM-62CC-POLE-SAW-CHAINSAW-Brush-cutter-hedge-trimmer-/140671400834

I see they're still $179 with free delivery :-)

Hi Jackfruit Ettiquette, yeah it hasn't missed a beat! Still going strong, the 'chain oil' leaks a bit when not in use, but I think most chainsaws leak a bit of oil?
It is very hard to use at maximum length (top heavy), but with 1 or 2 extensions attached, it's fine.
We have never regretted buying it!
(I see now they're $219)
