What's a fair mark -up on malathion ? If you buy 5L it works out at 12 dollars a litre At Bunnings I bought 100ml for 12 dollars ; this is 10 times more expensive than the larger quantity. I feel ripped off.

Bunnings have disproportional mark-ups for smaller amounts of herbicides and fertlisers as well but 1000% must be the record. On Monday I went to a different Bunnings store for better value and many prices and mark-up rates were different. The profit margins on Ag. chemicals must be huge.

Don't feel ripped off, John. To the vendor it means putting that 5L into 50 bottles and waiting for 50 people to buy them. Try buying 50 x 100ml bottle and finding 50 people to share that 5L with you to get it at $12/L - you'll find it'll cost you more than 10 times that in time and effort.

I know what you mean, but $12 v's $60 is cheap if it doesn't get used.
I wonder what my ol' man paid for a 50lb drum of Malathion powder in the 60's?

Lol - so true! The supermarket is often cheaper for many fertilisers, ant treatments and sprays...per volume and/or concentration.
Rural suppliers are even cheaper again.

Always pays to take your calculator with you - to compare price/kg and concentrations/mL active ingredients (!), and shop around. Seasol is a classic eg...check the application rates on the back to make sure u are getting bang/concentration for your buck...

I wonder if I found a product (eg glyphosate) at a higher concentration + a cheaper price at the supermarket - if Bunnos would still honour their 10% cheaper pledge...?? ;-)

ebay is probably even cheaper for small quantities of stuff...?

I saw 10kg sulphate of potash at bunnings for $45! I bought 40kg from Mky Rural for $46! THAT is a rip off!

Brendan, the searles 10kg bag is $47 at bunnings here.I make up an N:P:K:Mg of about 8:10:10:2 and need it.I also make a more organic blend with micros and dolomite but the Katek brand fertlisers have gone through the roof at the local ecoshop as well.

G'day Mike,
Katek's 'Super Growth', which NOW comes in a 25kg bag is about $25 here, which is nearly a fair price. But it used to be sold in a 35kg bag for about $30!, a much better deal. Bugger.

What's your NPKMg brew consist of?

Brendan I used to get the katek super growth 35kg bag for $34,I think but now the 25kg bag is around $33.
I use potash, superphosphate and alternate between urea and ammonium sulphate and epsom salts in that mix with a dash of micros in that blend. When spreading you have to be careful to stop granules and fines being seperated.
A few years ago I made a mix of dolomite, min + rock flour, micro mix with extra shots of borax,zn/mn and iron and I spread it lightly with the supergrowth. It will take years to run out.I spread fertiliser about 4 times a year and alternate between the NPK and supergrowth.

I watched a segment on the tele a while back where the only added nutrient was via foliage spraying. Apparently there was so much rain, any nutrient available was quickly leached away. I don't remember how often they apply it, but I'd imagine it would have to be at least a weekly basis.
I foliage spray here in the middle of every month and a very light, wide mix of whatever I can find at the beginning of every month.
I make my own foliar sprays based on my hydroponic solutions I make up, together with a weak addition of seasol.

I bow to your discipline, John Mc. I am now shamed into trying a more regular regime. I know my pot plants need more attention to their diet.

MaryT I believe it may be of interest to you to google 'MALATHION" & read all the implications regarding health, environmental hazards etc. It is very important for people with health challenges to stay right away from such potentially devastating chemicals.
Yes you can tell me to mind my own business, but I care about you!

Malathion is an organophospate with all that it implies . It is quite ancient and if you need to use an insecticide then it is probably as safe as anything else; it is used as a shampoo for nits in children. What happens when you become totally pure is that you get no crop and end up buying from the shop some produce that has far worse residues than malathion.

If I didn't use lebaycid under my terms, I'd lose my entire mandarin crop. At least I know how much is used, how often and my withholding period.
