Spring Quiz Competition II

    12 responses

Tommoz starts with ...
The Spring Quiz is back with another 25 fruit riddles. Winner gets the plant of their choice including delivery, subject to availability. The quiz is designed to be tricky and thwart brainless search engine abuse. Last year there were only three entries and the winner scored 17/25. I think this year’s instalment is easier.

The questions will be posted this Sunday at midday (AEST) and you have exactly a week to email your answers to me. Time of submission will be used as a tiebreak. Also make a post in this thread so I know who is who. *Ineligible: new or lurker accounts, last year’s winner and anyone deemed to have stern character deficits.

=======================
Here are the questions. You have until midday Sunday 14th to email the answers to **removed** and don’t forget to also make a post in this thread. The other rules and entry requirements were mentioned in my previous post. Winners and answers with explanations will be posted next Sunday. Enjoy.

1 Combine an orange and pomelo, then remove the fruit.
2 Get with the times.
3 PhD repellent.
4 A Jill vegetable.
5 Vegetable? Shrub? Fruit? Tree?
6 Rabbits on LSD.
7 The kitchen bench-top in Buckingham Palace.
8 Read this again, as per ‘Simon Says’.
9 Moldova and Cyprus.
10 Rocky V, Rambo X?
11 Cats, dogs and rabbits have two of these.
12 James had a well-endowed one.
13 A French auto salesman sold me this ‘lemon.’
14 Ponder this: We encircle this ‘bush’ early in the morning.
15 Organic Easter Eggs.
16 The fruit of Casanovas, but surprisingly limp.
17 What Singapore, Malaysia, Panama and Jamaica have in common.
18 Kevin Bacon, Tara Reid, Cybil Shepard.
19 Don’t underestimate Rex’s ‘interesting’ aromatic nuance.
20 If you were to chop up a melon and put it back together in a different way, you could end up with a different fruit.
21 Two birds lay claim to our icon.
22 The Azeris may well decide to boycott this fruit.
23 "(S)he loves me, (s)he loves me not" …but only on the inside.
24 For a hoarse voice, you’ll need to cough up at the counter.
25 Jamaicans make jam out of the fruit… presumably to go with itself?

EDIT: Everyone will get a bye for question 12 because I accidently included the answer in the original post. Correy, try to edit out the answer if you've already put up the quiz elsewhere.

Sounds interesting Tommoz,
I've a few serious character flaws, but nothing that can't be masked on the net.
I'll be in it!!

I thought you said it was easier than last year :) Thanks Tommoz. It should be on the Daleys Facebook, Twitter & Instagram & Google+ pages. So hopefully this year we can get more than 3 people submitting answers.

Comp has closed. Hope people enjoyed it. Here are the answers to the quiz, scoring of entries should not take too long.

1 Combine an orange and pomelo, then remove the fruit. Grape. Grapefruit is an orange-pomelo hybrid.
2 Get with the times. Currant
3 PhD repellent. Apple. An apple a day keeps the doctor away. Yes I know the difference between a doctor of philosophy and doctor of medicine.
4 A Jill vegetable. Jackfruit. Complimentary pairs.
5 Vegetable? Shrub? Fruit? Tree? Tamarillo or Tree tomato.
6 Rabbits on LSD. Blueberry. Rabbiteyes are a variety of blueberry, while LSD is colloquially known as acid, which is of course the kind of soil pH that Vaccinium enjoy.
7 The kitchen bench-top in Buckingham Palace. Pomegranate (Pommy-granite)
8 Read this again, as per ‘Simon Says’. Persimmon (per Simon).
9 Moldova and Cyprus. Olive. The national flags of these two countries include the olive branch, the only fruiting tree that appears on country flags as far as I am aware.
10 Rocky V, Rambo X? Rambutan. X is Roman numeral for ten. (Both are characters portrayed by Sylvester Stallone)
11 Cats, dogs and rabbits have two of these. Pawpaw. If they have 4 paws, then they have 2 pawpaws.
12 James had a well-endowed one. Peach. A famous work by author Roald Dahl; James and the Giant Peach. Everyone got a bye for this one.
13 A French auto salesman sold me this ‘lemon.’ Citron. French car manufacturer known as Citroen.
14 Ponder this: We encircle this ‘bush’ early in the morning. Mulberry. There is a famous nursery rhyme that sings of going around the mulberry ‘bush’ early in the morning. Ponder = mull.
15 Organic Easter Eggs. The small, green fruit of the feijoa/pineapple guava are often compared in shape and size to eggs. The earliest cultivars are in season around Easter, assuming you are in the Southern Hemisphere.
16 The fruit of Casanovas, but surprisingly limp. Passionfruit. Vine fruit.
17 What Singapore, Malaysia, Panama and Jamaica have in common. Muntingia Calabura, called Singapore cherry, Malay cherry, Panama berry and Jamaica cherry.
18 Kevin Bacon, Tara Reid, Cybil Shepard. Surnames of these actors are all cultivars of avocado.
19 Don’t underestimate Rex’s ‘interesting’ aromatic nuance. The King (Rex) of tropical fruits is the Durian and it’s known for its pungent odour. The sentence acronym also spells the answer.
20 If you were to chop up a melon and put it back together in a different way, you could end up with a different fruit. Lemon (Anagram of melon)
21 Two birds lay claim to our icon. Kiwifruit or Chinese gooseberry (goose, kiwi bird). ‘Our icon’ refers to the Daley’s Logo.
22 The Azeris may well decide to boycott this fruit. Apricot (prunus armenica) is the national fruit of Armenia. This was a political quiz item as Azerbaijan and Armenia have been at war for decades.
23 (S)he loves me, (s)he loves me not” …but only on the inside. Fig. This fruit is quite unique in being an inside-out-flower.
24 For a hoarse voice, you’ll need to cough up at the counter. Raspberry. A word play on having a ‘raspy’ voice. It’s the most expensive readily available fruit (per kg).
25 Jamaicans make jam out of the fruit… presumably to go with itself? Breadfruit. True story.

I still think this year's version was easier, although most of you appear to disagree.

Congrats to Nick T, who top scored with 15/25.

You can contact me any time about your prize.
