I saw some cherry trees in the nursery today and decided to get the Stella variety. I live in Perth, have I made a mistake or do you think the tree will be fine and fruit? Any tips on looking after the tree?

If it gets cold enough there for a normal Cherry tree then it will be fine. Stella is a good variety

Chrissy, they grow well in the hills, where it gets colder at night, but if you are near the coast I don't think it will do well.

Sorry the digress from the central theme of this thread.Today I noticed Coles has imported good quality American cherries for only $9.98kg (usually 20ish and Aust. cherries very rarely offered) but cavendish bananas are $14.98kg in spite of good local supply and the markets coming down tp $8kg.It is the sort of surprise I had when I saw top quality australian T-bone for sale at half the best price in Cairns.Somebody is making huge profits.

Interesting Mike - those US cherries $15.99/kilo in Perth this week...sods - how can they justify double the price difference??
But - I broke my golden rule on imported fruit - and bought a kilo to stuff my face with on the road trip home...they were actually very nice too...

Just adding to this thread so I don't have to start a new one. I know a lot about vegetables but not so much about fruit trees.
My Stella cherry was bought two years ago and I expected some fruit this year but the 'flowers' that are coming out are not really flowers. They look like flower buds and the 'flowers' have sepels but with a green centre that then turns into leaves.
Will this continue in further years or is it just a result of some environmental stress?
