sweet leaf bush/plant or changkok manis

    11 responses

NQ starts with ...
Can anyone please tell me where in Perth, Western Australia can I buy the sweet leaf bush/plant. The biological name is sauropus androgynus. It is also called changkok manis. In Hokkien, it is called 'mani chai'. Thank you.

Hi NQ the only place I can think of is Bloomings nursery (I think that is the name) in the wanneroo area. They had a plant there called sweet leaf and it was edible so that might be your best bet.

They are rampant in my yard and seem to enjoy a good hacking with a cane knife.

Blooming nursery have them Rose. They're also available at weekend markets. If south, try canning vale, if north, try Newpark.

Just a suggestion do you have any good fruit and vegetable shops in Adelaide? Here in Melbourne Sweet Leaf bunches are occasionally sold in some fruit shops and asian grocery stores. Saw some a few weeks ago in the local fruit shop with fresh leaves and stems. If you bought some of those, there would be a good chance they could be grown as cuttings.

Have you tried Rare Fruit SA
https://rarefruit-sa.org.au/
or contacting SA people from countries that know about it ?
I remember sweet leaf from Cairns, in gardens, and sold by PNG Ladies at Rusty Market.

@Linton I'm quite familiar with the larger asian grocers here but unfortunately have never heard nor seen it being sold before. Thanks for your suggestion though!

@jakfruit etiquette Oh! What an interesting organisation. I dropped them an email in their Q&A. Hopefully something comes up. I have lots of friends from SEA countries but nobody knows where it can be found...Thank you!
