Hi guys,
I am planning a slow drive from Townsville to Cairns and beyond, taking my kids to a few waterfalls and camping sites along the way.
My question to you is could anybody recommend good nurseries/farms/gardens/sites where I can maybe collect some exotic fruit/plants along the way?

Hi Scott,

There is one at Mirriwinni town (20km north of Innisfail) in woopen creek road.
On the way to Cairns turn left at Russell river bridge . The name of the nursery is Exotic Grove. About 10 km down that road (open Mon to Friday only). Actually, there are some more nurseries on that road too.

Not far from that place on the opposite side is a rambutan farm. If you are lucky you could get some fruits there too.
Now back to the highway, there is a farm about 500 meter up the road from the turn off toward Cairns, another farm on your left. They may have rambutan and fruit for sale too.

Take care and have a good trip.

Lucy.

If you are going beyond Cairns, its worth making it to Cape Trib and Mossman. Cape Trib fruit farm is good and v popular and Scomazzons and a few otehrs are a good stop too.

Thank you very much Scott. My landlords said many thanks for your generosity. They are very much appreciated.
There is a market right in the city of Cairns (Fri, Sat,Sun) where you can find lots of tropical fruits too. It is in Sheridan street/corner of Spence street. Not many fruits in the season so Friday is the best day.
Port Douglas Sunday market at the foreshore is a good one too.

Thanks for the spots people! :)

BJ - the plan is to head up the coast to Cairns - visiting a few people and places along the way - up through the Daintree/Cape Trib coast to Cooktown across to Lakeland and back down through Mareeba/Tablelands. I'll try and find those places you suggested.

Lucy - Will do the Cairns/Port Douglas markets.

Trikus - My youngest is a banana obsessionist(word?)...she would live off 'em if she could.
I wish there was a Rare Fruit group in Townsville.

Scott there are a whole lot of great tropical fruit farms along the way that are privately run, especially around Mission Beach/Tully,Innisfail,Mossman and Cape Trib.It may be worth researching and contacting them and requesting a visit.Limberlost at Freshwater might be worth a stickybeak.

Schomazzons is very easy to find , only a few k's out of Mossman , its just after the Mossman Golf Club turn-off . Also Yum-Yums in town usually has a range of exotic fruits you can suss out while enjoying a frozen yoghurt in a cone mmmmm.

A fvew members in local Cassowary Coast Branch from Townsville , but they have property up here .. maybe you can start up a branch ?

Check out the botanic gardens in Cooktown. A few nice things there, and Flecker Botanic Gardens in Cairns.

The Flecker garden is good, but there used to be a tropical fruit garden over the road of the main gates, after a nice walk thru a wetland. Is it still there?

It is still there and you follow the trail from Collins Avenue, over Saltwater Creek to Greenslopes Street where the tropical fruit trees are. You're not supposed to pick fruit, slip a pandanus into your bag and that kinda behaviour but many people do.
