Hi Xun, we(public) are not allowed to sell seeds as the grower here has obtained PBR (plant breeders rights). You could contact the grower directly; they may be obliging since you are overseas. Alternatively, if you have family/friends here, get them to eat heaps of fruit and then send the seed (if permissable). Good luck.

It is rare for propagation of seeds to be restricted. as seeds come up slightly different to the protected variety. Normally only graftwood and cuttings are protected as they are the clone. Are you sure you have the facts straight?.

Look at the thread "This is a bit unusual fruits" for other comments about pbr of achacha. If seeds can be prohibited then how did they pirate the rights from South America. Also if they are registering the name, it is not a unique name ,it is just an abbreviation of the original name. Something smells here.

Good chance I may be wrong denise1, but in the case of the Achacha the PBR was placed on seedlings imported here so the importer/grower could maintain a monopoly on the market - it wasn't a select strain or cv, just the whole species (garcinia humilis)[most likely wrong sp. though]. From what I understood reading the PBR gobbledygook, harvestable material (?seeds) can be protected too, not just plant material. I'll stand corrected if this is wrong.
I agree with you, smells a bit fishy...

It is an undescribed species and they copyrighted the native name with a few letters missing.I understand it is in the top 5 in quality of all Bolivias Garcinias. They are permitted entry and ask a bolivian friend to send a better species or variety of the same species.I bet there was no genetic work done to establish its profile.
Sam ru du mangoes are in the same boat and snatching an overseas fruit and locking it up here seems the way to go.It is easier than breeding something yourself.
The plant breeders rights system should be given the respect it deserves in this country.

I believe they paid quite a bit to the Bolivians to bring the seed over here, so have sought to protect that investment by slapping on a PBR. I understand and somewhat support their idea, as it is commendable that they have taken such a huge leap in introducing a completely foreign and fantastic tropical fruit to a very Anglo European market, but the PBR sounds as bogus as can be. In any case, they will have had at least 8 years before anyone else has trees producing, and even then I doubt any other farmers would be fool hardy enough to try to muscle in on a market that will by that time be saturated by the Achacha group. I believe the Bolivians only really have one strain of garcinia that is better than this one, which is something like Achachachairu selecto, but getting that one out sounds near impossible.

A Garcinia enthusiast told me that there are 2 better strains of this species and a lowland species that also could be at least as good. There have been a few brazilian ones brought over the border as well.I don't have an issue with the achacha growers just the PBR system.
