When to chop off coconut tree? (forum)

Sand starts with ...
We have a lot of big trees in our backyard so we had someone come over and prune some of the big trees. He saw one of the coconut trees and said it needed to be chopped off! because it was hallow from the inside. The coconut tree does have termites. But isn't getting rid of the termites enough to save the coconut tree? and also, can a coconut tree trunk "break" because of being hallow? Anyway, the tree is about 35 years old and it would be sad to get rid of it.

Coconut trunks are very strong , I have seen them sway heaps in several strong cyclones up here , and not snap , when many trees did . Leave it be , seems your trimmer is just looking for more work .

Trikus I know what this guy is talking about, seen it quite a bit. I'm not sure what its called but sometimes coconuts hollow out at the center while the outside material stays healthy, does make them quite a hazard.

You both make good points, the question seems to me, do hollow coconut palms generally come crashing down, and are hollow coconut trees the ones that go over in major storms and cyclones. If you're not inclined to cut it down, I would seek independent advice first.

Jackfruit every time I've seen this happen the tree has snapped off either in the middle or a 1/4 way up, never at the base. I suppose this is because of the physics of it all, coconut trees tend to bend around the middle in high winds, but if the middle is hollow....yeah.
