Canistel

A slender and erect tree with cream coloured fragrant flowers. The fruit is round to oval and matures to a yellow-orange colour. The yellow flesh has a sweet earthy flavour and a meaty texture similar to a boiled egg. Seedling selection cropping in 4 years. Atzapotl is the Aztec name for the canistel. Atzamole is a dish which is like guacamole but with canistel.

Canistel - Ross Sapote

A seedling selection that is similar to a canistel but the fruit tends to be moister and less mealy than a canistel. They also tend to split open at the top like a flower opening when they fruits are fully ripe. The tree is slow growing and easy to control, once established they are drought tolerant. Called Eggfruit due in part to the texture of the pulp being similar to the yolk of a hard-boiled egg but the flesh is sweet like caramel.

This selection is from northern NSW, very sweet moist texture with superior flavour. The yellow flesh of the Canistel has a sweet earthy flavour and a similar texture to the yoke of a boiled egg. Sourced from Picone Exotic Orchards

Canistel Aurea

Aurea produces a large elongated fruit of excellent quality. The fruit is delicious eaten fresh or with a little salt and lemon juice added. Canistels are often added to sweet custards or made into delicious eggnog-like milk shakes.

Beautiful looking tree and produces alot ! It bears fruit in Winter when most fruit trees aren't producing, which makes it a good one to have in the backyard. | Vicki - Townsville, QLD 26-Oct-2017
