Avocado - Rincon (Grafted)VF's Edible FruitsUpdate: 19 days 17hrs Comments: - Love all avo's. Is one of my "A" varieties. Is a dwarf variety with a spreading habit, and much slower grower than my others. The tree's not attractive - very gangly looking. Fruit written off by some, but my family found it nice tasting - very creamy and mild flavour. Fruit not a good storer once cut though, as the invisible strings darken. Best eaten within 24-48hrs. Don't discount this one for the backyard if you have limited space. Note: Fruit ripe now (April-May) when there is none at any road-side stalls (Tamborine Mt.), so I'm happy! Fruiting Months March, April, May, June Planted: 2010 Height 1.3 metres Growing: In the Ground Qty: 1 Fruit Harvest: 2 Fruit Per Year First Fruited: 2 Years from purchase in pot Sun/Shade: Full Sun Water Given in: Autumn Pollination: Cross Pollination Cross Pollinator Variety: Sheppard Fertiliser or Organics Used: Manure and Citrus fertiliser When I Fertilise: Spring Pest Control: None yet, but I may net next crop as something (possum/bushrats?) pulled off/damaged most of crop. Only 2 fruit survived. Question: When is it best to prune,as I'd like to attempt to shape tree? Was this review helpful? Cherimoya - Forbidden Fruit variety (Grafted)VF's Edible FruitsUpdate: 21 days 12hrs Comments: - Cherimoya has to be one of the most delicious fruits I've eaten. It is slightly warmer where I live than its' preferred range (by a couple of degrees), but I'm still hopefull of some fruit. This variety is a bonus as it self-pollinates. Planted early May - will need some shelter from cold winter winds. Black Sapote - Maher (Grafted) VF's Edible FruitsUpdate: 21 days 12hrs Comments: - Very soft, sweet fruit . Not choclatey in flavour, but is nice especially when mixed with other flavours (rum, vanilla ice-cream,etc). My children love it. Planted early May - hope it copes with cold night temps coming soon (will have some help). Jaboticaba (Seedling) VF's Edible FruitsUpdate: 25 days 3hrs Comments: - Delicious fruit. Can fruit several times a year, with only short time between flowering and harvesting. May be many years though before tree starts bearing. Planted early Feb. and has grown 2-3 inches on most tips in 2 1/2 months. I planted in a mound over an under-ground spring - so far so good! Height 45 Centimetres Growing: In the Ground Qty: 2 Sun/Shade: Medium Sun Water Given in: Summer Pollination: Self Pollination Fertiliser or Organics Used: Citrus feed and Seasol -used sparingly When I Fertilise: Yearly Pest Control: Nil required yet. Pawpaw - Hawain Bisexual Yellow (Seedling) VF's Edible FruitsUpdate: 29 days 17hrs Comments: - Much nicer than the horrid fruit with the vomit after-taste from years ago. Much more vigorous grower than my red version. Custard Apple -KJ Pinks (Grafted)VF's Edible FruitsUpdate: 29 days 21hrs Comments: - Bought as I love the fruit, but wanted an easy care variety ie. no hand pollination required, and smaller tree. Should taste good as is a bud sport of "Pinks Mammoth", a tasty fruit. Plant very eager to set fruit (set a couple when still in pot, and again when planted out early this year - I removed, as plant too immature and shapeless yet.) Looking forward to great fruit. Height 1 metres Growing: In the Ground Qty: 1 Sun/Shade: Full Sun Water Given in: Summer Pollination: Self Pollination Fertiliser or Organics Used: Citrus feed and Seasol When I Fertilise: Spring Pest Control: Tree small enough for me to manually remove the odd scale insect, but may have to use white oil spray as tree grows. Nil other problems yet. Question: When is it best to tip prune? Was this review helpful? Yes | No | Report * You need your own My Edibles Page to contribute Quick & Easy |
Avocado - Hass (A) (Grafted) VF's Edible FruitsUpdate: 29 days 22hrs Comments: - I actually have Lamb Hass, which is supposed to be a semi-dwarf variety with larger fruit than Hass. Hass is my favourite avo. as I love the nutty flavour. ( This is my second attempt of this variety - the first drowned after receiving 400mm rain in 24hrs and it's dish not draining fast enough.) This is my second "A" type. Was planted Oct.'11 and as far as bushiness goes, in 6mth it has doubled. Nice shape , attractive tree. Planted: 2011 Height 1.2 metres Growing: In the Ground Qty: 1 Sun/Shade: Full Sun Water Given in: Summer Pollination: Cross Pollination Cross Pollinator Variety: Sheppard Fertiliser or Organics Used: Manure and Citrus food Pest Control: Nil required yet. Avocado - Sheppard (B) (Grafted) VF's Edible FruitsUpdate: 30 days 4hrs Comments: - Whole family loves the fruit, which is eaten almost every day. Sheppard is my "B" variety. I've 3 varieties which fruit at different times, so hoping to have continual supply. Tree did set fruit this year(2012), but promptly lost them when I fertilised and instead had a huge growth spurt (20-40 cm on most branches). Attractive tree presently. Height 2 metres Growing: In the Ground Qty: 1 Sun/Shade: Full Sun Water Given in: Summer Pollination: Cross Pollination Cross Pollinator Variety: Lamb Hass and Rincon Fertiliser or Organics Used: Manure and Citrus fertiliser Pest Control: None required yet. Pawpaw - Southern Red 8/10 GardenOfColumba's Edible FruitsUpdate: 82 days 10hrs Comments: - Quick, productive, healthy enzymatic fruit. The scent of the flower converted me to the fruit. The red is my favourite, and I've planted a lime just to go with the papaya. The lime enhances the sweetness and neutralises the smell that used to repulse me. Seeds a good substitute for pepper. Avocado - Reed (A) Paula-f's Edible FruitsUpdate: 95 days 16hrs Comments: - Just planted this one as I love the creaminess of the Reed avocado. Avocado - Seedling (Seedling) 5/10 Paula-f's Edible FruitsUpdate: 95 days 18hrs Comments: - This is an unknown seedling variety, and it has been in for about 9 years. It finally flowered this year, but unfortunately the 2 fruit that I thought would hold, fell off. I'm hoping that a few will stay on next time. Being a seedling tree, it grows very fast, but it's a great shade tree. I have 4 avocados.......and all are mulched really well with sugarcane mulch which they love, as they have fine feeder roots just under the soil, and this keeps them nice and moist. Planted: 2002 Height 4 metres Growing: In the Ground Qty: 1 Sun/Shade: Medium Sun Pollination: Cross Pollination Fertiliser or Organics Used: compost, horse manure, blood and bone and mulch. Pest Control: Anthracnose has been a problem with this one too, but I haven't sprayed yet as it hasn't flowered. Organic Status:Partially Organic Was this review helpful? White Sapote - Pike (Grafted) 9/10 Paula-f's Edible FruitsUpdate: 95 days 22hrs Comments: - This tree fruited after having it in the ground for only a year. The first couple of fruits it produced had quite a bitter aftertaste, and I was ready to pull it out, but the ones I have harvested this year were beautiful. I find you have to catch them when they are just turning soft, as shortly afterwards they will ripen too quickly..........and drop from the tree, causing them to go splat!!!!!!!! Haven't quite worked out what it tastes like yet, as there are a number of flavours combined. This is a lovely looking tree with quite a weeping habit. Planted: 2008 Height 1.5 metres Growing: In the Ground Qty: 1 Sun/Shade: Medium Sun Pollination: Cross Pollination Fertiliser or Organics Used: compost, horse manure and lucerne mulch. When I Fertilise: Spring Pest Control: None as yet, but will have to cover the fruit from birds, fruit bats, and fruit fly. Organic Status:Partially Organic Was this review helpful? Avocado - Secondo (A) Diana's Edible FruitsUpdate: 117 days 10hrs Comments: - Just planted. I delayed getting one, as only half the family likes avocadoes and we have clay soil. I have planted it on a mound on a built-up bed on a slope, so I hope that works. I like the idea that you can harvest at any size and they ripen off the plant. Also, you can use the leaves.
