It is a tall slender tree to 10m with creamy flower spikes in early summer. Small yellow green olive-sized, plum-like fruits ripening in autumn. Have very high Vitamin C content, can be eaten raw or cooked. Flavour is sour with an astringent aftertaste. Traditionally used as a thirst quencher and snack. Widespread over the northern tropical woodlands. It also is used in the seafood industry to improve shelflife of prawns. Fruit contains oxalic acid so consume in moderation.
