BERRY - ELDERBERRY

Fruiting Elderberry Sambucus berriesBy Edal Anton Lefterov CC BY-SA 3.0 (Photo Credits)
Botanical Name: Sambucus Nigra
Description

A small deciduous shrub whose berries are used to make elderberry wine. Elderberry plants are also grown as ornamental plants in the garden and are frost tolerant. Full sun and a well drained humus rich soil will provide the best results. A deciduous suckering shrub growing 3m or more. The berries and flowers are edible, but other parts of the plant are poisonous, containing toxic calcium oxalate crystals.

Comments: - Not sure which species. Sambucus (elder or elderberry) is a genus of between 5 and 30 species of shrubs or small trees in the moschatel family, Adoxaceae. It was formerly placed in the honeysuckle family, Caprifoliaceae, but was reclassified due to genetic evidence. Two of its species are herbaceous. The genus is native in temperate-to-subtropical regions of both the Northern Hemisphere and the Southern Hemisphere. It is more widespread in the Northern Hemisphere; its Southern Hemisphere occurrence is restricted to parts of Australasia and South America. The leaves are pinnate with 5%u20139 leaflets (rarely 3 or 11). Each leaf is 5%u201330 cm (2.0%u201312 in) long, and the leaflets have serrated margins. They bear large clusters of small white or cream-coloured flowers in late spring; these are followed by clusters of small black, blue-black, or red berries (rarely yellow or white).

Berry - Elderberry (Seedling)

Anonymous's Edible Fruits

Comments: - Had a small plant growing and flowering in the ground in Perth. Flowers were unscented and fruit never set. Transferred it to a 100 L planter bag with a submerged teracotta pot to supply constant moisture. Flowered almost contantly but only recently set a small amount of fruit.

Comments: - Removed. Way too weedy for this location, near bush. Easy to grow, deciduous in winter but not very attractive looking when naked. Suckers pretty badly. Flowers are lovely though and I used them to make elderflower vinegar.
Can be hard to source varieties that will actually produce berries and might benefit from cross pollination.

Elderberry is useful for medicinal properties and I'd like to be able to use it for cordials, wine and in cooking.

Update after 727 days: Man, these are very fast growers.  Obtained a large cutting from a job I was doing. In a matter of weeks it's got a full head of leaves and is throwing out heaps of suckers. Don't know if they are worth the space yet.

Apparently the flowers make a nice elderberry wine. There's plenty to give it a try.

UPDATE 2012: Growing like crazy, lots of flowers, maybe some berries this year

Using as a privacy plant because not much more room for evergreens.  Recently into ground, had been going happily in pot, nothing really to report.

Will be fun to make champagne from the flowers etc :)

Summer 2011: Cutting struck from John. I got mixed up and thought that it was for making gin. Poo to it not being but still there are PLENTY of things to be done with elderberry and I love the pretty folliage and big fluffy balls of white flowers.
