Fruit is typically a deep, brilliant red, but may vary from white to purple. Flesh colour is similar to outer colour, or somewhat lighter. Flesh is sweet and tart with berry flavours. Single seeded. Besides eating fresh, the fruits may be dried, canned, soaked in liquor. The bayberry is an evergreen dioecious tree with separate male and female plants. Jambolan Plum

Frost sensitive when young but once established is hardy to most conditions. It can tolerate strong winds and can be used as a windbreak tree. It can also tolerate prolonged flooding and dry periods. It is limited to fruit production in tropical regions in elevations from sea level to 600m above sea level. Given such conditions it fruits prolifically. The fruit can be eaten fresh or used in making Pies, Sauces, Jams and Juices. While native to India, Burma and Ceylon, it is now widespread across much of Asia and is also very popular in much of South America. Carries many common names including Java plum, Portuguese plum, Malabar plum, Black plum, Purple plum, Damson plum and Indian blackberry. It is a fast growing very attractive tree highly esteemed by Buddhists throughout Asia and often planted near Hindu temples. Purple Sugar Cane

Love this plant. I chose this plant because eventually I wanted a wind break for my banana plants. Also for nostalgia reasons. It reminds me of holidaying through Queensland as a kid. When I got the sugar cane I left it in It's pot for 2 weeks inside to let it settle and acclimatise then re potted it into a bigger pot. I have kept it inside next to a south facing window under grow lights to see it through winter. After the last frost I will move it outdoors under my veranda. See how it grows.
