avocado leaves (forum)

Hi. I have a Stewart Avocado planted in a row with two Hass's, a bacon, a Mexicola Grande, and a Fuerte. All these trees are 4 years old and about 7' to 8' tall. The leaves on the Stewart don't open out flat like my other avocados. They are semi-folded inward along the center vein, so the backside of the leaves (a lighter, dusty green) show. The leaves do not look diseased or distressed and are not discolored with brown tips, but they just don't seem right to me. Is this common to Stewart avocados? Sorry, no pictures due to my pathetic land-line.

Hi Michelle, I'm guessing you're in the USA? Here in Australia we don't have Stewart (or Mexicola Grande) - or at least not available to public - so a bit hard to comment. The leaf-folding may be a peculiarity to Stewart, but I had this happen to my Rincons' new growth when we had a 6 month dry spell, so possibly it's a sign of some dryness for your tree too. There are some US gardening forums which may shed more light, such as Cloudforest. Or alternatively, contact a nursery that sells the variety, they should be able to help. Good luck.

There's a mexicola or grande at tropical fruit world. Just one tree, someone should get scions from it imho! Its probably the last one left in Australia

What state is 'tropical fruit world' in Jason? We have a Fruit World in Mky, but it's only a fruit shop :-(
Very good idea of yours tho!

Interesting information Jason, I hadn't seen that on their fruit list. If you, (or someone else), are keen and willing to negotiate with Mr Brinsmead for grafting material, I could probably pick-up and mail to you.

VF I asked them if they had any thin skinned purple avocado. They said there's one vverrrry old tree still there. Assume its a Mexicola as it was grown in Australia at some stage.

Don't know if the old tree I've got is the same Jason? It was given to me as a Proserpine Purple? It's probably 30 years old? Skin turns purple when ripe. Has a very large seed, but the flesh can be 25mm (1 inch) thick :-) Taste 9

Jason, hoping to get to TFW in the next week or two provided rain stays away - I'll see if I can get more info. I can't remember the full story, but I think that TFW was already a research centre before current owner purchased, so I'm sure there are some hidden treasures there.
Brendan, sounds good! Was it especially bred for regional conditions?

Yes VF its an old Avocado research station. That's what they told me when I was there. I bet there's a few ancient all but lost varieties there.

No, Mango Mike. It eventually died from Phytophthora (root rot), about 2 years ago.
BUT, a baby tree is growing under the dead Proserpine Purple tree!!!! I just hope it keeps going and growing to be the same as the parent tree:)
