"you have no guarantee it will grow true to the parent...it will need five to seven years before it starts to produce. At the end, the odds that your tree will produce fruit are small"

It is probably a fungus disease called phytophthora and often kills the tree. You can get a phosphonate product that is injected into the trunk or another that is sprayed on the foliage. It often has almost miraculous results. If your tree dies then leaving the soil bare to hot sunlight for a long time can clean the soil before replacing. Next time you could find a tree grafted onto a Duke 7 resistant rootstock. Also try to keep ideal soil health to boost the health of the tree, such as excellent draining soil with sufficient trace elements and organic fertilizer such as seaweed, chicken manure or fish if available. Young and growing trees need sufficient nitrogen.Applied in spring. Seek online for correct dosage of fertilizer.

Electra needs some support here. Tell us folx- has anyone, ever, had any experience of a mature avocado tree growing in reasonably suitable conditions, which didn't fruit.

Until I see any evidence to prove otherwise I hold to the view that fruit is as fundamental to plants as leaves, stems, roots and flowers are, and as fundamental to plants as noses or eyes are to mammals. You might get the occasional failure, but the odds are very small, unless you breed very electively for that outcome.

Thanks all
I have sprayed with Yates anti rot which is for phytophthora and keeping fingers crossed. The soil is good.

Manfred, I know of seedling trees that have fruit, yes, but not sure if they are worth the effort. One nearby in particular is more stone than fruit, which are small anyway.

In this climate they need water, fertiliser and mulch. I would want a better return for the care I put into it.
